Unfortunately canyon tuna fishing is dead right now from the hydrogrophers down to the poormans. With the exception of a few bigeyes and rat yellowfin there really isn't much to catch right now. Hopefully fishing will improve sometime soon

tunabully, that is exactly what i've seen lately. nothing doing except random wolfpacks. i think i've only picked up 3 or 4 decent yellows this year, and no albies. they're killing pig yellows up in ccbay though, on topwater with spinning setups.

We've actually had a good season, but it's slowed down dramatically the last ten days. We fished this past Sunday/Monday with nothing to show for is except one 25 lbs yellowfin, a 70lb wahoo, three white marlin, and two blue sharks. With 141 boats fishing the mid-atlantic 500 tournament, only eleven tuna have been weighed in after four days of fishing. This is very unusual for this time of year, especially since no one seems to be catching from the Lydonia down to the Washington. Hopefully something changes soon, but we are going to wait a few weeks before trying again

Sorry I missed your replys to the Tuna Reply

Our 24 Hour Trips are $325.00 pp

The 36 Hour Iron Man is $425.00 pp

We carry only 25 fishermen on the trips! We have a full service galley, bunk room and an experienced Tuna crew.

Your last report is correct about the small yellowfin, there seems to be some good size schools of these fish popping up. Its good action but disapointing on the size scale.
We are sailing on Monday, perhaps we can find some of the big boys.
Spots are available for Monday 9/1-9/2.

GOLDEN EAGLE CANYON TUNA REPORT

Click the image to open in full size. Golden Eagle Canyon Tuna Report

It would be nice to put up a great Tuna Report, however the real deal is less than good. The Golden Eagle returned from its first Canyon Tuna Trip with some Tilefish, a few stories, a good time but No Tuna.Click the image to open in full size.

A first run to one of our favorite canyon locations south of the Hudson, looked very promising with clean, warm water, all of the bait you could want including squid, Cero mackerel, & anchovies, as well as some other predator species like pilot whales. The only pots that we came across were loaded with Mahi. All looked promising.
It seems that the target species was not on the scene in any numbers and what seemed to be there had no interest in our broad bait & chum offerings.
After picking up the anchor several hours later, we hit the pots to find few Mahi still on them and windy conditions making the pot hopping challenging.

With another Golden Eagle favorite location in mind and a ride to the North, we made a stop at the Hudson and found similar conditions but had better Tuna readings. While some folks concentrated on attracting Tuna to their bait or jig, others went to the botom and we started to pick a catch of Tiles keeping the day interesting. One fisherman had a Tile taken by an unknown high speed predator while bringing the fish up. The large "FAST" unknown fish dumped a few hunred feet of line before breaking off and continuing on leaving the angler without his Tile or rig. Click the image to open in full size.
Great folks to be with on yesterdays trip, lots of fun and laughs, and some hard core fishing made for a nice trip, but a Tunaless one!

We anticipate some, and more fish filtering into the area over the next days and weeks as conditions are all there to support them. Some good Tuna fishing to come.

We still have 5 spots available on Mondays Iron Man Tuna Trip!
Call Capt. Greg at (732) 681-6144 or log onto the Tuna Reservations Page of www.goldeneagle fishing.com for reservation information and the rest of the Canyon Tuna Schedule!

Looks like the weather may give us a window for the Iron Man leaving on Monday Sept 8th and returning On Wednesday AM.

Cheers
Capt Greg

CANYON REPORT 09/10/08

The Golden Eagle returned last evening from our “Iron Man” Canyon run with some mixed results. Conditions at the Canyon were nothing short of brutal with screaming current making our anglers use up to 40 oz. of lead to try and keep the bait in the strike zone. Even with terrible fishing conditions several of the anglers had strong run offs early on but could not capitalize on them.

Some tilefish were boated to 30+ pounds by a few of the Golden Eagle patrons using 50 or so Oz. of weight to hit the bottom of the 600ft plus water. The conditions and weight needed soon tired even the toughest of our fishermen.

Pot hopping for mahi’s provided some excellent mid day action for the Golden Eagle, taking our minds off of the bad and deteriorating conditions putting several dozen mahi aboard to around 10 pounds or so in a short period of time.

In an effort to get something going with the Tuna bite, a decision was made after much discussion to run in-shore and look for some Blue fin tuna that we received reports of recently. The gamble paid off as the bluefin bite began providing some really great catch and release fishing of mostly 90-110 pound brutes. Pictured is Golden Eagle regular Tim Valente showing his 110 pound Blue Fin Tuna.

The Golden Eagle Captains and crew would like to thank the “Iron men” who sailed with us and hung in there through some tough conditions and picky fishing at best, and finally were able to get into some good Tuna action.

Bluefish action continues to be very solid, and we have begun our regular Bluefishing schedule as of 7:30 AM this morning through Monday.

There is still room on next weeks Canyon Trip. For reservation information and to look at the full Canyon Tuna Schedule visit www.goldeneaglefishing.com or call Capt Greg at (732) 681-6144 to get on this or one of our other Canyon Tuna trips.
