| Marlin fishing with Dave B.
Fished on Sunday 9/10 with Dave B on Reel Gem in the O'side Anglers Marlin Tourney. We had real good luck with about 7 knock-downs, 4 hook-ups, 1 fish kept to weigh then smoke, and one fish released. We had a game plan that was different than most and stayed in closer to the beach than the fleet, fishing south between Scripps Canyon and the Nine Mile Bank (H2O 69.5 degrees). Both the fish which were landed were taken on live mackerel which were dropped back to fish in the spread or slow trolled near jumpers. Best colors for the lures seemed to be the bleeding mackerel. Dave B caught the first fish (127 lbs) on the drop-back early in the day as we had just finished putting out the lures. First mate Mike acted as leader man, and I drove the boat during the fight. This fish was tough and jumped and greyhounded for about the first 10 minute of the roughly 45 minute fight. Mike fought the second fish near noon on the slow-trolled mackerel, with Dave as leaderman and me again driving the boat. The second one was released unharmed. We farmed the two other hook-ups with rookie mistakes (too much drag (Dave) and poor boat handling (me)), and had several other fish just not stick. We were all real stoked to go marlin fishing and actually see, fight, and catch marlin. It was also satisfying to put together a game plan (based on info gathered and Terrafin) which worked well. Get out there and get them while it's good.
