LONG BEACH - A 38-foot pleasure boat exploded in a shipping channel, ejecting two people into the water and leaving the craft in pieces Monday.
The explosion occurred about 10:50 a.m. Monday, mid-channel near 1400 Pier C, near berth C57 in Channel No. 3, officials said. The area is just west of Pico Avenue and the Los Angeles River.
The two people were rescued from the water by people in two other boats and were taken to the hospital. One of them had second-degree burns on his lower back, left arm and head and a broken right ankle. The second person had less serious injuries, but the extent of those injuries wasn't immediately known, said Fire Department spokesman Will Nash.
Rescue boats were picking up the scattered wood and metal debris.
"There doesn't look to be a lot of fuel in the water," Nash said.
"The US Coast Guard, which received the report by marine VHF radio, is investigating, said Lt. j.g. Andrew Munoz.
