Short story...
Helped stop a flood and got reamed.
Long story...
Show up to kids soccer game and find two ladies putting up caution tape trying to divert people around mud and flooding soccer fields. I look over and see some new landscaping being washed away as a line of sprinklers runs wide open. I would have offered to help but I had to drop off my kids soccer equipment and his game was about to start. I run over and hand the ex his shin guards then run back to offer my assistance.
By the time I get back over to where the two ladies were they were no where in sight. The first time I walked by I heard them telling another soccer parent that they couldn't find the valve to shut it off. I guess it was the female principal of the school and one of the head of the soccer program ladies. I run around the school for a while but can not find either of them anywhere.
As I'm watching the water spread, I'm thinking to myself... this water needs to get shut off QUICK. It's about 8:30am and this could ruin the day for alot of kids if it continues... I have been working on golf courses for about 15 years and do this sort of thing every day. A total no brainer... took me about 5 minutes to find the isolation valve. So I shut it off then turn the valve box lid sideways to mark which one was tampered with.
Then I walk around the school for about 20 minutes... missing half my sons game... and look for someone to explain what I did. I talked to some people in by the pool but they are clueless as to who I should contact. I see a truck that says Vista Unified on it parked sideways in a handicap spot and put two and two together... This must be the person trying to find the problem. I look for this person but can't find him/her. Not wanting to miss ALL of my kids game, I write a note and explain what I did and leave my name and number under the windshield wiper.
About 15 minutes later I get a call and the guy sounds heated. I tell him what I did and run over to show him exactly what I did. I notice that the valve box lid is not sideways any more but not shut all the way. I told him "That's the one I shut off". Dude starts rippen me a new one about how I did it all wrong...and that's it not even the right valve. I told him "look bro, I can totally understand your frustration but save yourself a lot of time and trust me on this one". I explain that I watched the watter pressure lower as I turned the valve and essentially shut off as it necked down. Told him that as the pressure lowered the solenoid probably kicked in shutting it off. I also give him a brief explanation of my background assuring him I wouldn't have fucked with it if I didn't know exactly what I was doing. He still continued to rip on me telling me to never touch the schools equipment again.
My attitude through all this was very calm and I apologetic. Dude just wouldn't let it go so I said sorry one last time and walked away.
Moral of the story......... I guess I should have let the water continue to flood and eventually shut down a day of soccer for a bunch of kids. I hate having to deal with people like that. I could have done nothing and saved myself an unnecessary raise in blood pressure and headache of having to deal with this ass.
I thought I was doing the right thing. I might think twice next time.
Chris

Thanks guys. I am convinced I did the right thing and would do it again if I had to. It's just one of those things with me... seriously, who likes to be talked to like that? I'm just glad I walked away. And I can only hope that when he finds out everything I did was the right way to do it, he feels like a shit for being an ass hole. I doubt it though.

Way to save the day for the kids Chris | Yeah the funny thing is that he showed up with a pipe wrench about as long as his arm and he was all sweaty and shit. I think he was trying to shut off the main to the entire school... and the isolation valve was right next to the line that was stuck on.
Lets see... Shut off the water to an entire school, water fountains, restrooms, etc... or isolate and shut off the problem? Hmmm. I guess he failed rocket science.
