1:33 p.m. November 30, 2006 SAN DIEGO – An F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet crashed around noon Thursday at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station moments after a pilot ejected from the aircraft, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 12:20 p.m. about three miles east of the Miramar air field. It caused a small brush fire near the wreck, near Rue Chantemar, south of Pomerado Road and on base property, said Maurice Luque, a fire department spokesman. A Miramar spokeswoman said the pilot, who was from VMFAT-101, a marine fighter attack training squadron, ejected safely.
He was found east of the wreckage, not far from the crash site, Luque said. The pilot was taken by Miramar Fire Department paramedics back to the base in an ambulance.
“He was conscious and did not appear to have major trauma,” Luque said.
The fire burned six acres of light brush and was quickly surrounded by fire crews. A helicopter was being used to extinguish the blaze.
The F/A-18 is a supersonic, all-weather attack aircraft that can operate from land bases or aircraft carriers, said Maj. Jason Johnston.
The plane is a staple in the Navy and Marine Corps and can perform a variety of roles: air superiority, fighter escort, suppression of enemy air defenses, reconnaissance, forward air control, close and deep air support, and day and night strike missions. The Hornet replaced the F-4 Phantom II fighter, A-7 Corsair II light attack jet and A-6 Intruder, which all were retired during the 1990s. The jet is worth about $50 million, according to Navy officials. | |
