visa fraud

BUSINESS NEWS - If you have an ATM card with a Visa logo on it, your personal financial information could be in the hands of criminals.

Visa has notified banks around the country that account information may have been illegally accessed after a breach at a U.S. retailer. In response, Wells Fargo and Bank of America have already begun re-issuing some ATM check cards.

Citibank says it's now blocking "pin-based" activity in the three countries where there have been fraudulent transactions.

Visa says consumers should keep a close eye on their accounts and quickly report any fraudulent charges.

Re: visa fraud

HOLY SHIT!!! This is bigger then I thought. This problem originated with CitiBank and the story broke last week. It was such a bad security breach that CitiBank locked out ALL atm/check cards issued in the United States and Canada, requiring customers to go into a branch to change their PIN#. Now think about that... imagine if you were travelling and your only way of accessing money was just locked out, and the only way to get it unlocked is to return to the United States. LAME. But now Wells Fargo and BofA are in this as well?

This is being used in certain circles(specifically computer/network security) as evidence that these companies do not care about the security of their accounts, or their customers. Already identity theft is a problem in this country, and nothing is done about it despite counter-measures being available and already implemented in other parts of the world. And then stuff like this happens that shows just how vulnerable we are.

Vote with your dollars, take your business to a local credit union.

Update: Here is some linkage:

Debit card fraud outbreak raises questions about data breach: Major credit card associations and financial institutions are saying little
"The continued refusal by major credit card associations and financial institutions to identify the source of a data compromise that has resulted in a wave of debit card fraud worldwide is fueling concerns about the scope of the problem. "

Re: visa fraud

We decided this am to NOT use the atm debit type card for anything except a cash machine. No more debit purchases just select 'credit' and it all comes out the same way. They can drain your account once they have the pin #.

Don't do DEBIT

Re: visa fraud

you know what really sucks, I have BofA. I can go to their website type in my username and password, I can add an extra 1 or 11 to my password. Then instead of getting "invalid password". I get a page that tell me it's time to change my password. WTF!!! and then I can 'change' my password. WTF is that! Still waiting for them to get back to me
