HELP!!!!! There little black ants everywhere in my home. I have tried everything that I can think of to keep them away: sprayed Ortho Home Defense around the perimiter of my home several times, never leave dishes in the sink, always clean up any spills (I have a two year old so there are a lot,) take out garbage daily and keep it away from the house, put out ant traps, baits they are supposed to take back with them and kill the colony, followed trails and pluged every crack and hole they could come in, trimed tree branches so they dont hang over the roof, keep all food in airtight containers. There are constantly a few lookers around EVERYWHERE and if the smallest crumb gets overlooked there are hundreds of ants swarming within minnuets. Because of the two year old and a pregnant wife I dont want to spray poison inside the house. This is driving me crazy. Short of burning the house down are there any suggestions?

YES!
When we lived in S.D. we had the same problem and nobody could get rid of them. We moved to Hawaii and had the same problem here grrrrrrr.
We got a new pest control company and this guy came in and placed a clear paste near where he found ants coming into the house. NOT ANOTHER ANT ever sence!!!!
I will get his number and you can call him to find out what he used.
Said it would not hurt pets or people even.
4 months and still no ants!!!
Aloha, Pete

I use these twice a year in my house and it wipes out the ants, crickets, & spiders.
I just did it last week, works like a charm.
I place one cartriage in each room of the house and 2 in the garage.

Forgot the name but they sell it at HD... Its a bait trap in a white disc. In the center it looks like peanutbutter is the bait. Nothing else really looks like it so you wont miss it... Get that stuff. It works. At first, it will seem like your ant problem gets worse... But give it a week or so, they will be gone.

Depending up the size of the colony, they are most likely not foraging for food in your house, but for water. Once the colony reaches a certain size, getting water becomes the critical issue. That would be a good reason why baiting them doesn't work.
They sometimes live in the walls. A professional pest control operator will be able to assess the problem and find the right solution for you. They deal with this daily, including the people who don't want any poison around because of pets and babies.
I worked for Orange County Vector Control on the Red Imported Fire Ant program, and learned waaaaay too much about ants in that 2.5 years.

Find where they are coming from. I'd guess you'll find rotting wood or soil like a planter or fence and that is where you need to concentrate your spraying, not in the home unless that is the home. Simply follow the bastards lines, they like under the overhang on the outside of the house.

I too have kids and pets also and don't like using any pesticides. I use Skin-So-Soft from Avon. It's totally safe and kills ants on contact and keeps them away. You can buy it cheap down at Kolbys swap meet. I also apply it as skitter repellent, works great and keeps my skin baby soft, lol. Just take a spray bottle and mix 1 part Skin So Soft to about 4 parts water and watch those pesky critters die. Death_To_

Or, go waaaaaay old school, and draw a line of chalk, yes chalk, around where they are entering. Ants refuse to walk on chalk. Something about how it dries up there legs and they fall off. Worked for me. Trap one ant and draw a circle around it with chalk, grab a beer, and watch him frantically try and escape. Its pretty funny.
Fuck, im a loser....

Way back in '88 they took Chlorodane away from us because it became a political football, and was involved in a couple of newsworthy lawsuits. Never mind Dow Chemical wanted in on the termiticide business, and little old Velsical was producing the best ant, roach, and termite control chemical out there.
Bought our current home in '84, sprayed under and around it with 74% Chlorodane, mixed at 2%, and never saw another ant for 15 years.

If poison is out of the questuion, I'd try borax/sugar mix. They are attracted to the sugar and get the borax in the mix. Kills the bastards pretty good. Takes a few...... but works.
