| Anyone know how to clean a streetbike carb?
Just picked up another Road star (2005) for my girlfriend with only 430 miles on it. Im guessing it hadn't been run in a few years because of the low miles, but the gas that was in it gunked up the carb. It runs great at freeway speed but when starting up, it tends to "burp" and needs the choke for longer than normal.
I remember watching my dad clean a dirtbike carb about 10 years ago but would really like a "mentor" for cleaning the carb on this bike and possibly putting a new needle in it. I would take it to the dealer, but would rather learn myself.
Anyone in N. County (or anywhere really) willing to help a BDer out over Pizza and beer?
I would really appreciate the help.
Tommy

you're going to need to clean out the idle jet with berryman's carb cleaner, removing the float bowls to remove any dirt and varnish, along with accelerator pump diaprham on each carb.

The jets and needle need to be cleaned out. Probably not more than an hour of tinkering.

if there is aluminum involved, normal simple green will probably do some damage.
there is one that is safe, simple green aircraft or something.

I just took my son's YZ 250 F into the shop to have the carb cleaned. Did not feel comfortable doing it myself. Charged $120 to clean and tune it.

Last bit of advice is to make sure you write down or better make a diagram of how you take it apart. Just like reels it helps when you put it back together. Good advice also on cleaning the tank, lines, and also the filter if there is one. Good luck and save the beer until you're done. Don't ask how I know. |

streetbike carb, dirt bike, car, truck, lawn mower, IT'S A CARB!
take is off, remove the float bowl, use berrymans chem tool to clean all passage ways, napa sells a cool gallon can of carb cleaner with a basket for dipping, put the whole thing in the basket and let soak for a while, take it out and spray it off with carb cleaner.
Your problem sounds like the slow speed jets might have a little gunk in them, unscrew them and use the straw to shoot cleaner through them.
there's not much to it, I have dissasembled outboard carbs, chevy v8 carb, my crf450's carb, countless other things and there's nothing to be afraid of.
your street bike carb is probably like my crf's FCR carb, a roller slide type, w/accel pump. it will only go back together one way, after you reassemble, move all the parts, there should be freedom of movement.

If it is an FCR be careful with the carb spray , there are rubber parts inside (floating valve plate seal) that will not be happy.
Forums can be a big help, here are a few links. Most likely somewhere on the net, there will ba a how-to with pics for your exact carb. http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/56/96/
This one is sweet. http://roadstarclinic.com/content/view/60/96/
I agree an off idle stumble or hard to start is likely the pilot circuit. This carb looks like it has a starter jet, clean that too. To start I would just pull any jets that are easy to get to, if that does not fix it, pull it and go to town.

I just did a little search, it's not a FCR, it's a vacuum slide type, with coast enricher& TPS, just remove the float bowl from the bottom, spray the jet passages, and your done.
