| Kids & the Swine Flu - What's your opinion?
Ok, going back & forth with the wife here and would like some opinions from both parents of young kids as well as non parents.
Are you getting your child the Swine flu shot?
I've never been big on getting flu shots for myself (I have mixed feelings about them), and have always bypassed doing so, and this Swine flu thing seems a little overblown to me, but then again I don't really know if it is or not, so I am kinda looking at it this way....... it's kinda like buying insurance for your car, boat or house..... you may never need it, but if the time comes your glad you do.
I'll take calculated risks & gambles with myself, but when it comes to my kids (8 & 2), do you think getting this Swine flu shot is a definite yes?
Like to hear your opinions, as I heard a little 5 year old girl dropped dead today shortly after entering the hospital (or so I was told by my parents).

Like in the other thread...
My daughter has been running 101-102 temp since Monday night. Her school has reported swine flu at the school. Most the kids are out sick at the school too. My wife is a school teach and now she is sick...She is fighting to get a sub teacher to cover her class tomorrow becasue most the teachers are now out sick too.
Not sure if my little has swine or not. I think it takes a couple days to determine but looking at a 7 year old in the eyes who is running a 102 temp is painful. So if there is a way to prevent it, I would do it (swine or not). It was a little too late for us.

If I had kids I'd get them vaccinated. Here's an article from NPR about making that decision.

Man, after reading the other thread I am totally confused and not sure what direction to take.

Can't find the vaccine here, I would have them get it. Saw on an internet site CDC said 16 little ones had died from it recently. It seems to be especially hard on young ones.

My roommate in college finished med school at UCSF, Pediatrics residency at Boston, and a fellowship in Infectious Disease back at UCLA and working on MPH. I left him a message regarding this issue. I'll post any information he can provide when he comes up for air.

At this point I am leaning towards having my oldest daughter get the shot, although my wife is against having our 2 year old get it, as my youngest has a very very rare skin disease called Mastocytosis (Mast cell disease) which effects her immune system, so there is speculation that the shot or spray could cause possible problems??? I hate thinking about this stuff...... I gotta cross my fingers that my kids stay healthy, and if they do get sick I have to hope it falls on a month that we are covered by insurance, as my med insurance is so screwed up right now due to a very slow year of work.

I say it's like buying a new car. Don't ever get the first year model. Wait until they have all the bugs worked out. I am a parent, just my opinion.

| Any doctors on here?
Any Doctors on here who are familiar with Mastocytosis (Mast cell disease)??? My 2 year old has this and I am very concerned about getting this shot for her with this condition.
I am bringing this up on this forum and discussion due to the fact that many doctors are not to familiar with this disease, and it's my hope that maybe there is one reading here that can give me his/her opinion on getting this H1N1 shot for my daughter.
I am going to try and get this shot for myself and 8 year old tomorrow, and it is my hope that I can safely get this for my 2 year old as well.
If you are a doctor who can shed some light on this please either respond here or PM me.
