My expereience: My wife had got sick for a few days a few weeks back. It was not crushing but she was out solid for 48 hours in bed. We didn't think much about it to tell you the truth. The following week we consulted the doctor on getting the regular flu shot (H1 not available yet) for our little one and they recommended it. She got the shot on a Wednesday and starting showing signs of flu on Friday (not saying she got sick due to shot). Saturday she is in full blown fever mode at 103. We do the bath, cool wash cloth, ice undr pillow, Tylenol/Motrin drill and it would not go down. We debated on what to do (4pm) as the ready care (SAT.) closes at 6pm and if we wait it would be emergancy at Tri City (not my favorite). In the middle of this I am getting ready to go to work for an event that is VIP and that is with a key client. We decide to error on the side of caution and take her to the Ready Care but really not sure what they could do. I head to work and my wife takes her to the Ready Care keeping me posted. By the time my wife got to the facility my duaghter was sky rocketing at 105+ and it was super scary. They got her on an I V and monitored for a few moments (starts to go down) called an ambulance to transport her to the hospitial (the next block over) because of closing hour and I assume liablity issues. She spends about 4 hours in the hospital which actually turned out to be a great experience (care wise). Her fever continued to drop all the way down to normal while being monitored. By the time I picked them up she was down to normal and wanting to eat somethng (great sign). The doctor gives me a prescription of Tramaflu as I am the only one who did not get the flue and this will assist in not getting it.
What I would do different:
1. Consult your doctor before getting sick. He's the one you trust and it would be a good idea to get his advise along with doing your own research. Email your doctor and a quick response is likely.
2. Contact your doctor ASAP when someone in the family gets sick. Ask what to do so the others don't get sick. Don't wait like I did. It effects some people differently than others.
3. The first signs of the flu get your but to the doctor (elders and kids especially). It was really scary for us when we couldn't stop the fever. We were very lucky that we were not away on vacation or elsware.
4. Don't wait untill the closing hours for ready care if you can help it! I havn't seen my bill yet but I'm sure it will be in the 1K+ range.
In closing I know many people think that they are tuff and rub a little dirt on it and its all good. Believe me I'm usually one of them. But this is not the usual drill here. I treated my wifes illness as a normal illness but should have taken it much more serious. When there are little ones involved it's a total game changer. Do not treat this flu like the others especially for those who already have health concerns, elderly and the young. I am not an alarmist but be informed so your not caught off gaurd. Hope this helps.
