"Everybody into the pool, seals or not
Regarding "Volunteers line up to sequester seals" (News, Jan. 26):
I don't get it. Since when have the rights of seals surpassed the rights of individuals?
These volunteers are nothing short of eco-terrorists. They have used the media to enlist public sympathy by stating that the seals have been tortured and beheaded, when they haven't. They intimidate and bully those who choose to exercise their rights to enjoy a day at the beach. As the article states, the police have responded to 58 disturbance calls at the cove.
What is so special about seals? You can't eat them. They have depleted the local fish population that you can eat. And they attract sharks that can eat you. I'm going to go out on a limb and say, it's because they are cute and furry.
Well, I think they are loud and smelly and I don't want them around when I go to the beach. I go to the beach to enjoy the sand and surf. I go to SeaWorld to enjoy penguins and seals. I go to Earth Day at Balboa Park to enjoy hippy activists. Never should the three be mixed.
The Children's Pool is for families to enjoy the beach. Seals have been mating peacefully since the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act was enacted in 1972. So why do they now need an exclusive beach to reproduce?
Seal activists need to get lives. If they feel they must do something positive, why don't they try taking on poverty, tsunami victims, the poor, the homeless, AIDS or global warming. "
