Who turned you on to bloodydecks.com?
I stumbled across you on the web, can't remember how..

What are some of the differences between the Fly rod fishing and the regular
fishing? How long have you been fly fishing?

I grew up fishing with spinning and conventional gear. I used to go out of Dana Point and San Clemente (pre Dana Pt harbor days) when I was a kid. I first tried fly fishing in Massachusetts ~10 years ago. I was a little backwards in that I learned to fly fish in the ocean, not in rivers, lakes, etc. I became addicted in short order. Compared to what I was used to (bait, jig fishing), it was a much more challenging sport. Everything I knew about fishing didn't really apply to fly fishing. You cast differently, the reel is different, use lighter tackle, lines, etc, tie your own flies, etc. If the fish aren't biting, I could easily burn the morning working on my cast . . . then I started tying my own flies . . . then I completely lost my mind . . . . it seems the only reason I work now is so I can go fishing.
It is a blast. You should pick it up. You can do it all year round here in the surf (corvina, perch, halibut

What is the biggest fish you caught on a fly rod?
My largest fish ever was the tarpon I mentioned above (I didn't land the gator). The definition of exciting is fighting a cow tarpon in 5 feet of water. It was like a bus was driving thru the shallows! The best fish I ever caught was a 55# dorado in La Paz. That dorado jumped at least 10 times, well over 6' high as it shot ~200 yards away! The best part was the look of my panga captain's face when I released it. My favorite fishery is the striped bass fishery on Cape Cod. The water is crystal clear and stripers up to 40# can be caught in 2 feet of water, while wading. You can fish from shore, boat, in the water, whatever. The visuals are amazing and it is a blast! Every year, during the third week of June, I make my annual pilgrimage to the holy grounds of striped bass fishing, Cape Cod.

If you look in the first pic with the gator, you can see my fly on his nose. I cast across his nose and stripped it. When it got on his nose, he got so pissed off that he bit it . . . and I set the hook, of course, like an idiot. It was fun while it lasted . . . all three minutes of it before he broke off.

so that's how you catch an alligator . . . in case you ever find yourself stranded in the everglades

Have you ever hooked yourself when casting out?
Believe it or not, I've never hooked myself with a fly, while casting. I do it all the time while tying them though. I have hit myself in the head a bunch of times but managed not to set the hook. The best thing about fly fishing is that it has made me a much better fisherman, regardless of the tackle I use. Of necessity, I've learned better rod control, how to properly work and tire a fish, better knot technique, light tackle tactics. When I fish with my friends, I catch as many or more fish than they do, rarely lose a fish once I have it on, almost never tangle my line with theirs . . . and I manage this while never using anything heavier than 20# tippet with my fly rod or 20# test line on my conventional rig.

Chris
I look forward to fishing with you
The pic's are awesome & I thank you for being a Member of the week!

I've been flyfishing since I was 10 and have never had the opportunity to fly fish the salt water. Never known anyone who would allow it on their boat, but have been dying to try it. I only have an 8 wt., but I'm not too bad with it. Anyway, welcome to the board, hope to fish with ya sometime.

Rob
