The way I read this is pretty simple:
"Don't sign up for the trip if don't actually plan on going."
I'm not trying to steer anyone away from this trip. Really I'm not. But these trips are a commitment...in both time and money. If you're thinking "hmm, that
might be fun" but aren't fully committed don't put your name on the roster until you ARE fully committed.
If you
are on the fence...talk to some of the guys who've gone before. Review the tackle requirements and figure out whether you'll be able to beg, borrow or steal what you don't have. Figure out if you can take the time off. Have a game plan for the cabbage...the trip fee is just a teaser. By the time you pay for permits ($120ish), jackpot ($30), galley tab (8 days is alot of drinking...could be over $100), tip for the crew (figure AT LEAST 10% but probably 15-20%: $300-400) and fish processing (my last bill was $450) you are going to sink about $3k into this trip excluding any of your tackle requirements, clothing, liquor, sunscreen, pussy pad, moist toilettes...whatever.
Having said that, once you go long, you never look back. I don't look at offshore fishing the same way since I did my first 8 day last year.
I look forward to seeing some new faces next year as well as the same asshats that have tolerated me for the last two years
