south of puertocitas fishing

i am thinking about taking the kayak down for the baja 1000 this year and spending a couple extra days fishing. i would like to be south of puertocitas but not too far off the end of the pavement as I will likely be solo(if I can talk some friends into going we will likely go a bit farther).
Any idea how the fishing will be around the end of Nov?
Weather?
Any tips for good beach camping/yak launching spot?
Pm's are certainly a reasonable response to my questions
Thanks in advance,
Mike

You can pretty much camp on any vacant beach. There are some good ones, but I have not driven past Puertocitos, so I don't know vehicle access. My buddies go every year in the spring and camp to the north of Gonzaga and find good 4x4 access and fishing from shore.
During the 1000 a few years ago I brought my inflatable down and we launched out of Puertocitos and camped out of the boat for three days. We fished along shore and out to the islands. The wind blew the whole time we were their. We caught and released tons of smaller fish. The only noteable fish was a 30# grouper caught near Isla Muerte, to the north of Isla San Luis I think. We fished the lee sides of the islands due to the winds mostly. The islands would be a long paddle but definitely doable from shore in a kayak. I did not have a fish finder or a chart, we navigated by Autoclub map and fished shallow. If you are a bass guy, you will love it. It is year round.

I used to go to a friends house north of Puertocitos and south of Percibu on the beach a couple times a year. Fish are year round.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of good input from this board, I know a lot of guys have places down there in Gonzaga and Puertocitos.

Good luck if you are racing. We are not racing SCORE this year. nobaddaysracing.com

There is a little island area about half way (or so) between Puertocitos and Gonzaga. I think the island is called Huerfanito (spelling?) Several good areas around there to launch and fish. Bottom critters that time of year. Good cabrilla and such. Good luck.

thanks for the replies guys!
not trying to head to far off the paved section past puertocitas as I've been on that road on a bike, and as you know its a bad one...maybe if I can get a friend to come with an onboard welder
i've been doing some research and it looks like there is plenty of beaches to camp on and I do have a very capable truck so i can get out to just about anywhere I want to.
Again thanks for the info on types of fish and DNIW!!!
Any tips on lures? Crocs like in BCS?
Small feathers or irons, plastics, sabiki and live bait, squid?
i'll be taking it all but what to try first

I did a day trip a few years back a little south of Puerticotos from San Felipe over Thanksgiving kept going till we could find somewere to launch the Kayaks (2 wheel drive truck) it was wide open on the Pinto bass mostly small but some nice ones just like BCS anything shiny gets bit. I'd love to spend more time there sometime.

Crocs, irons, and plastics. You have to take a lot of plastics though. Never tried squid down there. We used to get clams and catch triggers off the rocks when I was a kid. That was a long time ago however.

"You have to take a lot of plastics...." X2
Typical bass gear works great. You gotta be able to cast. Look at structure to find your fish.

I've never fished south of Puertocitos but I have fished just north of there. I used the medium sized crocs, to keep the tiny ones off, and added a small strip of squid to that. Absolutely KILLER. Good luck, have fun.

I never use plastic's bottom fishing in Baja as the Triggers rip the tails off and don't get hooked. Croc's are the best but seriously anything shiny gets bit. Also try trolling rapala type plugs along the shoreline I would suggest getting Neil Kelly's book "The Baja Catch it is a Bible for inshore

Krocodiles, Cast Masters, white and orange Scampi types. Broken back Rebels are killer when trolled, you have a shot at bass, triggers, sea bass, grouper and Corvina. The road is 2 wheel drivable all the way to Gonzaga, lot's of work on it in progress. There are 2 camps just south of Puertocitos that are somewhat in the lee of Puertocitos cove. If the wind blows stay close to shore, November is a crap shoot it will either be windy or beautiful and you'll know if the wind is going to blow by 10 am... unless it blows all night then you can normally expect 3 days of wind...
