How can we replace a generator on a boat in PV?

Does anyone know how you can get a new unit into Mexico on a 10 temporary import at the border to not pay a broker or the sales tax?

The old unit on the boat needs replacement.

My guess would be to try and find a boat headed for PV from the states, and have them bring it down for you.

Would you be breaking the law other than paying the sales tax? That would be my first worry, especially down there.

If you can wait till July or August for delivery to PV you can put it on my new boat before it leaves the east coast...

I know if the old unit leaves the country and the guys stamp your letter and photos documenting the departure, they will let a new unit in a day or 2 later. I have done this with engines when I lived closer to the border.

This worked as I managed to get the same guy leaving and coming back through the same crossing point. But PV is a longer round trip than Hermosillo was.

I was hoping that there might be a way to evidence that the old motor was disposed of at the dump and not sold in the country in front of an aduana official at the PV airport, since that also qualifies as a port of entry.

Does anyone have the phone number for customs in PV?

If its on your boat and you import them as a unit, you are legal. But this is considered temporary, under a 6mo/10 years permit. But as a tourist you can't sell or give it away in the country as the you can't pay sales tax you should collect on all sale, or even legally invoice in Mexico as a tourist.

If they discover inclaimed merchandise that you are trying to sneak through, they can fine you up to 7x the value of the item, and conficate it if they want to hang you out to dry.

As a Mexican, you can only import up to a $1000 of stuff without using a broker, but you still have to pay the $1500 sales tax, so most of the loopholes are closed.

If a mexican permanently import it, the broker charges about $350 for services + the 15% sales tax so on this item that adds up to about $1400+freight for the permanent import.

Lots of times, stuff has to be taken to the states for warranty work, or just to find parts and someone qualified to fix it. So do you have to drive both ways from LA for everything that needs fixing in LA?

It is quite simple if you are on a 10 year temporary importada. Talk with the Paperman, Juan Arias, and for a small fee he will complete the necessary paperwork for the import. you will either have to ship your old gen out of the country, or Treasury will come and destroy the old Gen. My experience was that I got the new engines shipped, and fees paid into Mexico for less than I would have paid in sales tax in most any state in the USA
