If its on your boat and you import them as a unit, you are legal. But this is considered temporary, under a 6mo/10 years permit. But as a tourist you can't sell or give it away in the country as the you can't pay sales tax you should collect on all sale, or even legally invoice in Mexico as a tourist.
If they discover inclaimed merchandise that you are trying to sneak through, they can fine you up to 7x the value of the item, and conficate it if they want to hang you out to dry.
As a Mexican, you can only import up to a $1000 of stuff without using a broker, but you still have to pay the $1500 sales tax, so most of the loopholes are closed.
If a mexican permanently import it, the broker charges about $350 for services + the 15% sales tax so on this item that adds up to about $1400+freight for the permanent import.
Lots of times, stuff has to be taken to the states for warranty work, or just to find parts and someone qualified to fix it. So do you have to drive both ways from LA for everything that needs fixing in LA?
