Trailering to PV??

I own a 25' Davis Pilothouse diesel with a tower. I have trailered over 100 thousand miles down the Baja highway. I have been to Mag Bay 7 times with my boat. With all of the robberies and violence going on in Baja I am considering something different, trailering to PV instead of Mag Bay. I am leaving November 1st and could easily alter my destination.
Is early November a good time? Would you recommend trailering to PV? How are the roads and launching facilities? ? I would plan on staying on the boat at Punta Mita. Is this possible? Do I need tuna tubes to have a shot at a big fish, or do jigs and Cabbies work fine? I can cetainly bring anything you need from the states if/when I drive down....
Your thoughts?

Re: Trailering to PV??

Nov is a great time.

The trip is longer but 10x easier than Trailering to cabo. Roads are great for 95% of the trip. It took us 30 hrs stragiht thru. Launching is easy.

You don't have to have tubes, but they make a HUGE difference.

It will be VERY hot sleeping at Mita. With a fast boat like yours I'd just stay at PAradise Village.

I have a set of tubes you can use or buy.

PM me if you have more questions or want the tubes.

30 Hrs to puerto Vallarta...are you sure ....its 26 to Cabo???
And the difference is you have to get temporary importation papers for your boat and vehicle at the border.

Re: Trailering to PV??

The paper work and temporary importation are hurdles. I have been up and down the Baja to Mag bay dozens of times, La Paz and to Cabo delivering boats #? numerous to count.

The trip to PV is totally different animal. However, I am stuck on PV and have no immediate plans for Mag Bay, Cedros or Cabo.

Re: Trailering to PV??

like gato gordo said, easy drive, cross at nogalas....straight shot on toll highway the whole way down, mostly 4lane divided highway. the paperwork is no big hassle if you have the ducks in a row, and enjoy the ride down, and the fishing when you get here!!

Re: Trailering to PV??

Just 2 places like Baja.

There is a 2 lane stretch between Mazatlan and Tepic that is probably around 70 or so miles long but she is pretty flat.

The last two lane stretch is on the 100 mile grade down from 4500 feet from the highway down to Punta Mita. About 30 miles of that is windy but very doable.

I would stay in Tucson, Obregon and on the outskirts of Mazatlan so that I was fresh for the 2 lane stuff starting early in the morning.

30 hrs is making real good time IMO.

BRING MONEY>TOLLS WILL COST YOU APPROXIMATELY $200 each way. The last tolls going south will only take Mex pesos. No US dollars.

Re: Trailering to PV??

What Bullshipper said....that last grade going down was insane. Plenty of gas all the way down. we slept in the boat parked at a gas station. 30 plus hrs for us. Getting the sticker for the boat was kinda a hassel. we had to park in a overflow parking lot then got bussed to the checkpoint to get the sticker for the boat and the truck. Make sure you give back you sticker for the truck when you leave, the boat is good for 10 years i think, could be wrong. someone might have more info.
Good luck. and what Bill said....bring cash for the toll booths. they get spendy.

Re: Trailering to PV??

I am heading south next week, no boat this time just driving. We are planing on surfing and fishing our way to Costa Rica and back with lots of time spent in mainland mexico. I know lots of the guys on the board have driven to PV. I have only flown to PV and driven to Puerto Penasco. I am looking for advice on the tempory vechical import. I know you dont need it to get into Mexico, Do you get asked for it when you get pulled over or cross state lines? Will I need it to leave Mexico at the Guatemalan border. Any info is appreciated. and will someone please buy my boat before I leave.
