John, this is really great. You guys got a heck of a work out, and it sounds like you didn't lose many either.
Fantastic that your son got to go on a trip with you when all the stars were aligned also.
So, I imagine your buddy is chomping at the bit to go back to Ixtapa, right?
Thanks for the post.

John
Great report and congrats on the nice fish.
You learned a big fish leason - you go full bore drag on a big marlin or a mean tuna on its first run and you a risk of some type of failure. Fishing Vallarta during the season means you never, never know what is going to eat your bait - and as soon as youre convinced it will be a manageable fish, a beast is hanging on the other end of the line.

Nice pics, great job! | David,
Which swivels are you now using?
I know what you mean about the lure, for whatever reason a highly productive lure has that perfect action that is unmatched by an identical lure.

Thanks for the post. | Hey Jeff,
The loss ratio wasn't too bad. We didn't loose any tuna but there was an additional 700# marlin that go bill wrapped in my leader without catching the hook. BTW, thanks for your advice on setting hooks, it worked like a charm.

That's exactly what Scott told me. I'll go half drag at first then crank down after the fish makes it's first run.

I use those Momoi swivels, no problem with those IMO.

When I was with John during the last BD tourney we were using those Mamoi swivels, until we lost 2 lures and 2 live bait rigs just trolling around for 2 days prefishing. We threw em overboard on the 3rd day if I remember right, and Sr Zigzag took a terrible ribbing for buying them in the first place. IM, they need a safety as the line can get to one side and pull them open.
I have never had a coast lock come open on me, but I did get a batch that were tempered wrong and would snap. Had the same experience with some double tuna hooks years ago too. Who knows, everyone has their own mouse trap.
The new Penn ball bearings look pretty good, but I kind of suspect that chinese is their native language.

After you close them on the ring/loop/lure, give each side a little tweak with dykes or pliers, kind of firm handshake crimp strength. You can get them back open after that, but it will take some effort. We use them a lot long ranging with no failures at all if you do as I prescribed.

Nice pics, great job! | We do not use any snap lock swivels when fishing for cows, blues or blacks. Only crimps and no failures. Knock on wood! If we do use a swivel when trolling lures in a big fish area we use McMahon ball bearing snap swivels. Not particularly user friendly, but never had a failure. JMO
