Line Holders on rod holders

I have been using $8 Cannon downrigger clips to hold and release mono and spectra lines at the reel. The adjustable clips work on very small to very large live baits with light pressure, and you can leave the reels on freespool with just the clickers on when trolling.

Its location at the gunwhale makes it handy to test and reset and will work in standard rod holder, outrodders, and outriggers. I have eyes to also attach safety straps near my rod holders, but the clip and also be attached to the rod or reel.

Anyway, this has helped me when using live bait with circles hooks on roosters, sails, marlin, tuna, and dodos, so I thought I would share.

Re: Line Holders on rod holders

They also work well for flatlines if your rod holders happen to be more vertical than the ones pictured...

Re: Line Holders on rod holders

Are those screws i see there Mr Shipper.are is that thru bolts holding that rod holder bracket.now this is a question of engineering not to incite the locals to a fever pitch.i like the holder and set up and would consider such a set up to go on the ZIG over hang on the fly bridge.wadda you think????

Re: Line Holders on rod holders

Bolts would be better Dave, but my rails are 6" thick and square, so I just used some 5200 between the plate and glass and some screws. After 4 years no problems, and I can run my 50W's in them.

I like these over the outriggers when the water is real rough in my little 20' boat. Rods in the outrodders don't bounce around as much as the outriggers when I am running hard to get ahead of fast moving tuna.

But your 35 Bertram doesn't bounce like my 20, and since you throw more wake, the longer OR may be needed to keep your lures in clean water for better visability.

I also have 16' OR's, as both have their place on my little boat.

We really had some fast action that morning thanks to Lora, and the clip came in handy.

I can see using the rubber bands on someone elses boat, but these are a lot more adjustable, and the very light release helps on sails that will spit the bait with any pressure.

When using real small sardines, the light release keeps the hook from being ripped out of their nose on a mis-hit when the fish come back for a second pass.

Nice looking setup Jeff. The last time out I also found out that sometimes a rubberband is to much on some fish. I might have to try one on a flatline.

This would be a cheap deal (free) for me to weld up for you Dave, and we could weld the different holders at the exact angles to
make the straightbutts and angle butts ride parallel
put them on one or two hd crosspipes and just fasten at each end to eliminate extra holes in the boat

2 options
One cross pipe between the ladder and the stern cabin wall with the exact height you want them to not bump your head, but still be low enough to place the rods, working around the skippy bait tank.
or
we could also weld up a big F to create 2 lower horizontal cross bars to weld more holders on 2 cross bars going over the bait tank to stay out of the way of the door.

I'll bring my tape and well figure it out there if you want.

This SS is incedibly strong when welded.
