Talking Vallarta- En Fuego!!

2 Trips on Yolaray, 6 big Toads, Largest at 279. Aug 1st with 4 toads. 10 boats at El Banco, 9 come home with a cow. Lots of bait, lots of Tuna, plenty for everybody. The 279 comes on a flylined caballito, 130lb fluoro, 6/0 Hayabusa circle hook. The Hayabusas have a bigger gap than the Owners, and is probably a bigger hook overall. The 6/0 is probably a bit big for the cab, but the fish were stupid and that's what they had rigged. The rest were all on skipjack, 300lb fluoro with an 11/0 J. Wednesday saw 2 large Black Marlin empty half the spools of 2 50WLRS and end up bending open a pair of HD Snap swivels. This happened within 15 minutes of eachother.Ouch! Water is blue, temp is around 84. Yolaray now has 12 cows over 200lbs for the season as 1 of these 6 were just under 200. Schwing!!

Question

I am fishing the Yolaray in the beginning of September (I wish it were tomorrow). Anyway, everyone keeps telling me to bring small diamond jigs to catch skipjack. Can someone please clarify what brand and size of jig?
Thanks

I think my retirement plans have changed. dang. Moo

get some, I was hesitant to reply because Iam too lazy to find a pic of diamond jigs. But just those little chrome diamond jigs you can actually find them at big box stores like wal mart. They will come vacuum sealed in a package. But small mega baits work fine. I think single hook is good as it damages the bait less. They make Skippy catchers now and you can buy them but all it is, is a torpedo sinker, red eyes, single hook. That's it. Small chrome irons with single hook is good. We would slow troll for the Skippys with small squid skirts with 4 lines out while in the bow casting iron for skippys. Dual bait making.

Once we were full and tuna tubes we still would drag one skipy jig to make bait as we fished the big baits. Change them out and that bait can go from WFO to nada real quick.

I had my little skippy skirt right off the stern and I got smoked by a Wahoo and lost the jig. . I saw it eat it.

Small, heavy, and chrome. Anything in this category will do, has to be heavy enough to cast and sink on 40lb, as Brad said, you want to reel in the skippies fast so they don't get nailed before you them on the boat. Check out www.YOLARAY.com for a phone # , or email Manny at CaptManny@Yolaray.com.

hooks

If they are the smaller skippies you can bend down barb a bit on the single hook - you dont end up w/ as many bleeders.
