The f n airlines want to charge you $30.00 for extra bags. So with one bag, rod tube and cooler of fish it adds up quick. Figure I can buy a cooler down there to bring back.
Last year I brought rods and reel that hardly got used because the bay/surf fishing did not seem to be all that hot. What do you guys do. I like to bring my 9ft Iron stick and a couple others.

I never take rods longer than 7' 6". But then again I fly Volaris out of TJ. No Extra charge for bags(under their 25kg limit)

NWA counted 1 tackle bag & 1 rod tube as "Fishing Equipment" and let me combine them, only charging me for 1 item. I put my tackle bag in an oversized Bass Pro Shop soft bag and it saved me $$ both ways when I flew up north this summer.

On Alaska, you can take a rod tube, tackle box, and one bag combined as one item. Most agents don't know this, stand your ground and tell them to go check their website, and 5-10 minutes later you have 3 for 1.

Unless you're Hard Core surf fishing you'll find little use for a 9' rod, I never use anything over 7'.

Down in PV I use a 7' uglystick travel rod in the surf. If I'm going somewhere I want fly gear I'll pay the man and take a 50" rod tube and throw in a 2pc steelhead rod or 2 for the surf. For bigger fish I'll charter an outfit with good gear. Also have an Okuma Nomad travel rod. Believe it or not they are fair rods and 3 pc so you stuff them in a suitcase/duffel.

If you have to pay $30 each way it would be better to bring it. An "Icecube" cooler here on sale maybe $30 there $60 plus the $30 to get it back and if you go over weight even more. Volaris changes 150 Mex per kilo if you go what they allow for their different ticket rates. Their highest ticket will let you check up to 88 pounds total. As for rods and reels, I don't bring them as the boats I fish on have some of the best!
Barnes is correct saying on Alaska you can bring three pieces of fishing gear and they should count them as one.

Yep Dennis, Think I will bring one like you said, Thanks !
Also, Did you guys see those vacuum bags from Ziploc with the small pump you place over the valve in the bag? Work awesome! Pretty reasonable and beats lugging a sealer with you .

I ran into a guy a couple of years ago carrying his rods on the plane as "carry-on". They were the Whopper Stoppers made in Riverside, CA. http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/fi...-mini-rod.html (Whopper Stopper Mini Rod)
My wife and I pack our fishing gear into our ice chest for the trip down. Aluminator is right, an ice chest will be double or triple the cost at your destination than they are here.
We carry all our rods in a tube that is 7' 3" long. Our longest rods are 7'. I use a 7' Graphiter rod with a Finnor spinner for my shore/surf fishing rod. It also works great as a bait rod on the pangas or cruisers.
I also have an old two piece "ugly stick" that I have traveled with. It really is a POS compared to all our one piece Calstars though, but it fits diagonal in our large suitcases.

| Think you are right:
Last year, the bait never made it into the bay (Huge bay) so surf fishing was mostly dead except for some action off the points for us anyways...Have you done much surf fishing?
