Alligator gar's pushing over 100lbs

What could I say Louisiana not only have phenominal offshore fishing but it also has awesome inshore fishing for a specie of a different kind Alligator gar. Venture out to Cajun land and behold toothy monsters.

Im out here in cajun land (Louisiana) for a month and on the hunt for some Alligator Gar I drove aroud the city scoping out new spots and happen to stumble upon a Canal in which noone fishes and is loaded with moster Gar Fish. These guys are no joke to catch It take about 10 hookups to land 1 and about 15-20 bites. The problem is not only hooking them since they have a jaw full of un penetrable bone and teeth the size of Crocodile teeth. Well I will let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

This monster was 5ft 10'' I hooked bigger ones but they shook the hook. As soon as they get to the shore my buddies always try to high tail and run up the bank since they look like a gator. Im am searching for that 7-8footer see you guys soon.

From Cajun Land

GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT THAT?

Back to you guys again from Cajun Land,

Last week I caught a couple more and there was a weather change so the Gar went on Lockjaw. I have not been out for these suckers since last Thursday since the cold front, rain, wind, and more wind. Went to my original spot it was kinda slow I saw a local that lives down the street from the spot who is pretty much the only other person that fishes the spot. I asked him if he want to go explore with me so off we went to another spot I been eying. We cast out our gar rod and I proceeded to work my way down the Canal fishing for largemouth bass about 5 to 10 min into it I get hammered on my little 3 inch suspending Jerkbait. Started the battle with this sucker it pulled like crazy in it went, then out, in then stripping line down the bank so I kept walking down the bank following it. I yelled over to the local named Michael get the stick with the nuse! He comes running down the bank 15 min later and about 50 yards down the bank from where I originally started I put the nuse around his neck and dragged the sucker on the shore.

Largest fish I ever landed on a bass rod 5' 101/2'', weighed in right about 100lbs, on a Curado 300 DHSV, suffix 50lb braid, 20lb Stren Magnaflex mono, and a yozuri jerk bait.

All I got to say is Heck Yea!!!!!!!!!!!

Not the 7ft one I am hunting for but on my Curado!!! Man!

Gotta also thank my uncle for giving me all the pointers on catching these monster gars and accommodating me on my stay here in Louisiana.

Where ever you go
Go Big Or Go Home !

I'm going to continue to hunt for that 7footer until I leave. "Stay tuned"

Caught 3 earlier this year in the marsh on the east side of Big Lake, near Lake Charles LA. All caught using 1/4 jig heads with Berkley Gulp grub tails. Rod was a GUSA 663 I built as a spinning rod. Penn Slammer 360 spooled with 10lbs Berkley performance braid. Took over 30 min for each. Light tackle gar is very fun! Set the drag on your reel right and it's all good. I have a buddy who routinely catches 40+ lbs alligator gar on fly rods. I don't know how to post the pictures I have.

They taste good but I would actually prefer to release them due to the fact that they are a bitch to clean. They have thick skin like a aligator if you take a butcher knife and swing at it as hard as you could it will just spark the scales. Literally you will see a spark you have to take wire cutters to the skin to cut it open. But my uncle like to eat them so home they go.

Yea the one I landed on my bass setup was awesome! I wish I could of shipped my rods over here from California for the trip but it was too expensive. So I just brought my reels and borrowed my uncles rods. Im still pretty new to gar fishing so I am learning a lot. But on 10lb braid i dont think I would drop that low at least for this spot I seen some 7-8 footers they look like 200lbers if I get one of those on I want to land them. So burkly gulp grub tails what size are you throwing? and what color?

Yes, very good, but there is a lot of hard fiber with in the meat so most scoope the meat out and make fried "gar balls''.

alligator gar are tricky to catch. if using bait you have to wait a very long time before setting the hook. they take the bait and swim off. then the sit on the bottom where they begin to eat. once swallowed they turn and go back to where they came from. any resistance and they spit it out. it is very frustrating. when using lures its a matter of luck if you stay hooked up.
