They taste good but I would actually prefer to release them due to the fact that they are a bitch to clean. They have thick skin like a aligator if you take a butcher knife and swing at it as hard as you could it will just spark the scales. Literally you will see a spark you have to take wire cutters to the skin to cut it open. But my uncle like to eat them so home they go.
Yea the one I landed on my bass setup was awesome! I wish I could of shipped my rods over here from California for the trip but it was too expensive. So I just brought my reels and borrowed my uncles rods. Im still pretty new to gar fishing so I am learning a lot. But on 10lb braid i dont think I would drop that low at least for this spot I seen some 7-8 footers they look like 200lbers if I get one of those on I want to land them. So burkly gulp grub tails what size are you throwing? and what color? |
I was using the 3" grub tails in chartruse. #30 flurocarbon leader. We had no gaff on the boat because we were fishing for redfish and flounder at the time. We tried to tie the bow line around their mouths boat side but only worked once. Most of the time they would launch like a tarpon when we got the rope around the mouth.
