Venice Offshore

With football season here and the early teal season starting Saturday, fall is right around the corner for sure. The river level is low and the water is green and pretty in the Venice area. Offshore right now is killer with a variety of fish to be taken. The tuna fishing is excellent right now and you don't have to go far to get them with most fish being in the 50-80lb class. The airshows some days have been way cool. The cobia fishing in the last week has really been good with most fish in the 30-40lb class. I did have a monster follow up a hooked fish last tuesday that was 70lb plus with a head like a five gallon bucket! There have been some very nice color changes in close with a few bull dolphin and marlin caught as of last weekend. Tarpon are thick right now off the passes and big. The local tarpon fleet has been catching them up to 200lbs. The big tuna aren't far away. The next full moon in October should be the ticket for the big nasties. Another treat coming up soon is the trout run in the river. Once the river starts cooling down in October the trout fishing will be as stupid as it gets with limits the norm. I fished them last year in the big boat and everyone enjoyed it. I have some open spots left in Oct. and Nov. Give me a call to book your next trip.

Great photos,
I've got to make a trip to Venice, Louisiana real soon. Is this the best time of year for the larger grade tuna?

Kyle,
Best time in Venice is ALL Year! The biggest fish seem to run in Jan/Feb on the famous "Lump" but, the weather is also iffy then. Its a toss up. If you want the biggest fish and I were you I would plan to fish a few days or have a few days open on your trip in case it blows up. Which happens quite often during lump season, from what I have read. I fished there in April we had a banner trip with Yellow Fin Tuna's up to 100+lbs as well as Dodo's to 50+lbs. Live baits and poppers were the ticket not many things you can experience like having a 100+ lb Yellow Fin Tuna come crashing DOWN on your popper! Simply the best tuna fishing on the US of A! For consistency, size and overall ability to get to and from the grounds Venice just cant be beat. We also lost a tuna on our trip that was significantly bigger than the #224 according to our captain that he had caught previosuly after 6 hrs on the rod. Thats why we go fishing! If you want more specific intel shoot me a pm. There are a number of outfits that post on here and run out of the Venice Marina area specifically.

As far as big fish it changes from year to year. you have a chance at a 180+ any day of the year but the odds are much better october-march.
