Epic bassin' from the Yak

Conditions looked great on paper so Ray(crabkracker) and I made another run at the wall.

Posted an invite on a board I help moderate and got a friendly challenge by my buddies from San Diego.

Biggest bass wins a 6er of Fat Tire from the losing team.

OC vs SD...game on!

Got on the water around 7ish. Conditions were simply FANTASTIC!
A mild 5 mph wind, ripples around us and t-shirts+shorts weathers all night long.

Took our time, trying for a spotty in hopes of a MDR Grand Slam.
Only made a few casts before we went back to 'the plan'.

Come 8 PM, the dinner bell sounded and we got a few bass.

Yes, these are all different bass. Some photos did not come out, but you're getting the idea...

Ray with an early 'contender'. We didn't bother taping him because we figured it would take a 6+ lber to win.

Then my turn....Bendo...big time bendo...drag buttoned down, unable to turn this fish for 30 seconds, bendo....

My custom Shikari being pushed to the limit...

My hook after that encounter

Stopped photographing the bass....

BUT, this one was photoworthy. People keep asking "how close to the wall are you fishing?". How's this for an answer...

Not hooked, but actually grabbed my critter bait. YES, I KNOW OUT OF SEASON...NOT LEGAL TO TAKE...BLAH, BLAH, BLAH.... Released him promptly after getting him to let go of my plastic and a quick photoshoot....

Ok one more bass..3rd turd roller of the night, tight to the wall. Go figure..

Left them biting and headed in with NO wind and glassy conditions.

Final tally for the 2 of us, well over 50 bass landed...a few big ones released prematurely : with the average around 14-15 inches, a couple of mackies, a FAT sculpin and a bug.

Hands down, the best night conditions for fishing I've ever experienced and my best session of bassin from the yak.

And before anybody asks...
EVERYTHING RELEASED. I personally do not keep bass. Why bother when I've got a freezer full of tuna, dorado, lingcod and rockfish.

OH and for the competition....SD's best was a 2.1 lber.
For us...

all in good fun...

Yup, fishing at dark is great. The bass and other critters really like the dark plastics.

Congrats on a heck of a night guys! I have always wanted to fish "The Wall". Give me a shout next time and I'll see if I can come up and represent SD better than tonight's showing of a 2.1 lber.

Good Bassin' esp. for the MDR wall, better than my experiences there.
Way to represent the northern sector.

one of my favorite baits for fresh water are the yamamoto hula grubs that are pictured. Do you fish them on the bottem, do they hit it on the fall, or on the retrieve? Any info would be great. I fish Newport in a yak also. Thanks for a great report.

Great fish and geez, what a fish count. Thanks for providing pics of the plastic that you were using. I had to look long and hard to find that little wiggler.

I have seen crabckarker from the SC board.

It would be an honor to get a tight line with you guys.

I yak from King Harbor. Beige Pelican 13'.

If you see me, say hi.
