Foam in a kayak?

I recently read a post somewhere regarding a 'higher quality' foam filled kayak. Ive never seen or heard of a foam lined or filled kayak. Are these out there, and higher quality models, to keep the kayak afloat in the event of a swamping or do they add bouyancy, or do they even exist at all?

Some guys insert pool noodles inside.. It's not going to keep your kayak paddleable ( I think that's a word), but it will keep it from sinking to the bottom.

I think the foam model extreme is better. it tracks better, and it seems a bit easier to paddle.i have both

You see it a lot in Fiberglass or Kevlar sit insides. It does what you said keeps it on the surface if you roll or swamp. They also sell airbags for same purpose.
Personal choice i guess but if you have a lot of hatches maybe the pool noodle thing could work. Goes without saying PFD is mandatory for you.

Hi everyone,

How many noodles do you think for a typical yak? Or is it just trial and error? Taking the yak in shallow water with a bunch of noodles in there and trying to sink it???

I've debated this with my father many times. His belief is that is that 3 or 4 pool noodles will keep a yak a float if the hull should some how fill up water. I have my doubts and I have asked to put his theory to the test but he never has.

I do believe the pool noodles would help keep your kayak from sinking completely but if it's suspended about 5 feet of the bottom your still going to be swimming.

I recommed recycling as an alternative. Next time your done drinking a bottle of water put the cap back on and make sure it's tight. Repeat process many times. Put the bottles in plastic bags with about 10- 20 bottles in each bag. Distribut the bags through your hull. Foam floats really well but it's hard to beat encapsulated air.
