La Jolla Kelp

Went out from Mission Bay on our 2320 Parker - the "Katy B" - on Thursday 8/23/07, got big sardines at the bait barge (it was all they had), radio was pretty quiet and the reports we did hear were not too encouraging, so we stayed close. Did some bottom fishing off of Dog Beach and Mission Beach and caught some our first keeper halibuts.

Then we heard good reports from La Jolla, so about noon we went there to see what they were doing. Water was 84 degrees with a light chop. Got a big barricuda on a slow trolled sardine, and then, over by the Northeast kelp, a pole bent double and the reel started screaming.

Katy grabbed the pole and fought the fish, and seemed to be having a hard time with it so I turned the boat towards the fish and we got some of the line back. But, the fish wasn't cooperating. Katy got tired of pumping after 10 minutes or so, and she handed the pole to me (Mike).

When I felt the fish I said "Holy SH*T", this was a big and very determined fish. I started working him in gently, because there were no sea lions near us. I got a little impatient and Katy reminded me to go easy. "Remember", she said, "this is supposed to be the fun part." Another boat (small party boat) circled us and watched the fight.

After another 15 minutes he finally gave in, a nice (estimated 40 pounds)Yellowtail . When we got the Yellowtail to the boat and netted him, we saw that the hook was just hooked through a tiny quarter-inch-wide patch of skin in the fish's gums. Good thing we took it easy or we would have lost him.

That was enough fish to keep us busy cleaning fish, so we headed back in. We finished cleaning fish about 8:30 that night, put the filets in the freezer, and had BBQ'ed Yellowtail head & backbone, and rice for dinner. Went to bed happy.

We go at least once a week and we hope to see - and hear - you out there!

Re: La Jolla Kelp

Wow,
What a whacky report-from the 40(?) pound yellowtail to the 84(?) degree water to the party boat hanging around to watch you 'fight' that 'monster' to the 'netting' him (what kinda' dork nets a yellow-or even carries a frickin' net on his boat - I say bounce that guppy myself) to the backbone and head' for dinner line.
Doesn't sound like a report from a guy that would own a Parker (or is it just me?).
But, at least your wifes a 'looker'

Techincally you are supposed to carry a net on your boat every time you fish.

Looks like he is a dork that is in the know. Nice fish from the backyard.

Re: La Jolla Kelp

Hi guys,

On the weight, I don't have a scale on board (yet), but as I said, it was an estimate. It was 37 inches long, if that helps.

I always use a net. It's easier, I don't ruin any meat, and I can release the fish if I want to. Also, I've seen more than a few fish lost because of a bad gaff. For fish longer than about 4 feet, I might use a gaff, but most fish around here are small enough to net.

If I'm not making fish head soup, I always throw the backbone and the head on a barbeque. Most people just throw it away, but IMO it's really the best part of a fish. With beer (used to be Primo in the olden days) and rice, naturally. Try it! You will be surprised how much meat is there.
