Went out Sunday to do some bottom fishing, wanted to get a super early start so I was in the water at Davy's launch before 5am. Stopped at Bill's bait for a 1/2 scoop and headed for the 150 reef. Water was as flat as a lake, with no light out I wasn't worried about hitting any swells that I couldn't see so I ran at 20knots from the breakwall to the 150.
First few passes I hit some whitefish and some mini taco size rockfish, not what I was aiming for so I tossed them back:104167739, no floaters. The last time that I fished this spot I was flylining some live bait and hit two nice size 24" bonito, decided to do the same and within the hour
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. It was to big of a fight to be a bonita or even a large cuda, possible ling? Not likely likely on the fly. As I get it closer to the surface I begin to see that it wasn't your everday fish, it was a shark. It was about 5'-6' long and didn't fight much on the surface so I managed to get the camera and snap a picture and even ran some video (audio quality sucks). Now it didn't have the super long tail so I'm assuming it wasn't a Thresher, and I wasn't aware that Great White's hung out in this area. Once I got the picture and video the line snapped and off it went. Other than some shark fin soup that I had at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco is shark meat any good? How do you cook it?
Since I wasn't having to much luck on the bottom I decided to move about 2 miles west of my location and drift in another area, setup my flyline again. First trip to the bottom went BAMM! 18" rockfish, the picture does it no justice but it was a nice fight on 10lb test while it was at the bottom and got easy once it's insides exploded and it got closer to the surface. Second, third & fourth pass went the same but turned up some slightly smaller fish rock fish. While in this area I caught a glimpse of another large shark as it went past my port side, wthin a minute my flyline went
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, I was on again

!!!! This one spooled me on 30 pound test, I never stood a chance. By the looks of this one it had to go at least least 8'-10' in length. I managed to get line on it once, about 1 yard of it

but that was it. It put a smile on m face, I'm going back next week with some wire leads, heavier line and a deckhand, I was solo so I wouldn't have been able to do much if I got it up to the boat/surface.
So is this a Thresher or a Great White?
The day was full of mother nature, it went from night to light to fog with about a 1/2 mile of visibility, back to sun than the wind came followed by more sun.
Total landed
9 whitefish (all released/no floaties)
12 rockfish (5 smallest released/no floaties)
I also caught two bottom fish that are similar to the tree fish but orange and white in color, I can't remember what their called.
I finally picked up two hoop nets on Ebay for $30, comes with the line and floats, is that a good deal? Looks like my hooping days are right around the corner
