We decided to make another run hooping to get some christmas bugs for a party tonight. My father in law and myself launched the Skippy around 10am and ran out to 350 to see about some rockfish. I metered around and found some nice marks. First drop produced some big salmon groupers that went back in. We fished this area for about 1.5 hrs and only could manage some very short rockfish. Maybe the area was very picked over already? I dunno but this was our 2nd failed attempt at rockfishing off my boat.
We made the run in flat seas and little swell going a steady 21-22kts.
We got to the island around 1pm and began trolling for bonies for bait. The usual spots were not producing and it was very hard making bait. We only managed 2 bonies all day and the rest of the fish were horse mackrels that must have been 2-3lbs. I think mackrel works better as bait anyways so this was a good thing.
We began hooping at 5pm at the hotel and our first set produced 7 good sized legals and about 10 barely shorts. We reset and then pulled another 5 legals with just a couple shorts. The spot seemed dead so we headed around the corner to see what I could find. I metered a good rock so we rebaited and dropped just 1 more net for our last 2 legals. Not a bad trip but definitely not as WFO as times we have had before.
We finished up around 9:30 for a nice ride back to the harbor and cleared the channel at exactly 11pm. There was a shit ton of boats at the ramp for the xmas parade and it was quite entertaining watching them pull boats out of the water. Also I talked to a couple guys who hooped different parts of LB for nada. Anybody do any good in LB harbor this year??
I found a hoopnet belonging to a boat named "El Pescador" If its yours PM me and we can hook up. I found the float about 10feet under water and hooked it with a jig.
Lobster dog!
