| Bones, Bass and Baby Biscuits I fished local inshore spots today hoping to find at some of the better grade Bonito. I found birds and bait but no bones in my regular stomping grounds. The water had some morning sickness early then really started to shape up by 8:30. Not wanting to waste the good conditions and dropping tide, I decided to get a short pass from Nacho and make some meat drifts. Boy was I surprised to find he had some really nice anchovies to go with the horse sardines. I then proceeded to an area in the harbor that has really produced lately and spent the next 4 hours there. I flylined the anchovies with and without sliding sinkers and drifted a dine on a reverse dropper. The sardines were a bust but the chovies kept me busy with just legal calicos and lots of 3lb bonito. I picked up a really small wsb, maybe 2lbs. I don’t think I’ve seen one this small. I thought it was a turbo ronkie at first before I noticed its stripes. The tide was dropping fast and the wind was changing so I repositioned the boat for a better drift. Shortly after, I got picked up and the head shakes were strange and the fish felt fairly heavy compared to the calicos and bonito. I was thinking halibut when I see color and stripes! I can tell the fish is barely legal at best as I bounce it over the rail. A quick check confirms 26 inches and a quick return to the water. The last couple of hours were uneventful except for a fat 20” sand bass and a few more bonito. I kept a few bonito and macs for lobster bait and the rest swam for another day. Tight lines, Steve |
