Two Personal Best at Rosa 7/3 w-pics

Went out to Santa Rosa Island with my good friend Martin “the looper” aboard the “Big Drum”. The weather conditions in the morning were great but it got a little snotty in the afternoon with consistent wind speeds between 13 & 15 knots.

We decided to forgo fishing for Rockfish and opted to try and catch a big Halibut or two or three. We drift fished for a little while, but mostly employed did the bounce ball technique.

While drift fishing with frozen squid, Martin pulled in his personal best Whitefish at 27 inches/7.5 pounds. Way to go Martin!! That’s a nice poor man’s Yellowtail.

After bounce balling for a couple hours, I finally hooked a nice fish, and it turned out to be my personal best Halibut at 48 inches/ 33.5 pounds. Sweeeet!!

When we were driving back to port, we were stopped by 4 DFG wardens aboard their impressive aluminum cat “Swordfish”, about 1.5 miles east of Gull Island. They checked our licenses, fish and then informed us that they could’ve given us a ticket for not having our fishing rods stowed away in the cabin because we had driven through a marine preserve with the rods in the rod holders. I told them I wasn’t aware of that law and said that next time I’ll be sure to drive around the closure area.

Had another memorable fishing trip out on the big pond, I can’t wait to do it again. HOOK-UP!!

Till next tide,

What a RIDICULOUS and PATHETIC regulation At least they only warned you about their pathetic law.

Solid Halibut
Nice White fish...I've seen them that big down at San Martin Isle but never up here

Holy crap, I'd love to catch that whitefish on 8lb test. Pound for pound they got the biggest shoulders.
