I had the pleasure of going to San Clemente(Pyramid Cove) with a friend of mine and his father yesterday on his 24ft Parker. I've never been out except on party boats. We headed out about 1pm at 20knots across some unusually calm waters.Grabbed some dines and a scoop of candy(thanks Donz Rig)and then bunked up fort the night and got ready for the next day.
Had some lines in at grey light and nothing was happening. The weather was calm and overcast. Water 59.6 degrees. Just about the time I saw the sun peek above SCI I heard a clicker bein raped and my fiends dad(Bob)yellin FISH ON! I reached for the gaff and my friend Bill nearly took my head off settin the steel on his 1st hook up. Gaffed Bob's 1st fish and then headed for Bill's. We managed to get both Yellowsin the boat and the regouped.
I continued to throw my iron, both Bob and Bill checked their lines and rebaited. On the drop I saw Bob's pole nearly get yanked right out of his hand, so he's bent. Bill gets a hook up on Iron so he's bent. As I was headed for the gaff again I started to wonder if they invited me just to be their deck hand, when BZZZZZZZ WooooHoooo I'm Bent!
Not soon after we we surrounded. Every boat including the 2 party boats were elbow to elbow. This made our drift harder. we still managed to get two more though. Me 2 Yellowtail's, Bob 3 Yellowtail's, and Bill 3. Landed all 7 biters, none smaller than 20lbs and one of Bill's was at least 30.
So if you're headed out this weekend keep you lines tight, decks bloody and have fun! It's probably gunna be crowded. P.S. If you're on a party boat and someone tells you to use an egg sinker and flyline your squid while the Yellowtail are in 120ft of water eating off dropperloops(glad Bob showed me how to tie a Spider Dropper loop), don't be surprised when all you're bringin up is some other guys line 75 yds away. Peace!
