Newport Skiffin' 11/15

Went to Newport Harbor today with my two buds Odog and Rick. We rented one of the Skiffs from Daveys.
Wind was up but not too bad. Rick brought a drift chute so that held us in place really well.
Fished a few places for just a few nibbles, no hookups. Moved around I was able to land a 16"
Hali on a dropshot jerkshad. No pic cuz Odog lost it when trying to grab it with the bogagrip.
Rick was on a roll with sandies and micro spotties. Odog proves the bananas aren't bad luck.

We moved around some more and found some good spots to makes some drifts. Thats when I caught
the biggest spottie of the day.

Time was running out so we head back closer to the docks, we ended drifting a few more times.
We found the honey hole. Oscar gets rocked, few headshakes and its sayonara. I told him dont
worry I'll get that bass for you. Hehe I hooked up another nice spottie. All fish were caught
swimmies and jerkshads. We ended up catching around 20ish sandras and spotties
and one hali.

Hi cappo,

Nice report on that skiff trip. Great pics.

Question: Is the entire Newport harbor open to the skiff fishing? hummm Better Question: Are there ANY areas in the harbor there that they will chase you out of from fishing? Sometimes marinas watchdogs are being busybodys and cause one to get chased out.

Thanks,

tsurikichi

Ron,
I've fished Newport Harbor for years in my Whaler, my 12' bay skiff, and a float tube and have never been denied access to any pary of the harbor. You may encounter the occasional grouch but that is a different matter. The local Harbor Police and Sherriffs have always been very cool to me.

The entire harbor area is game from the water... 24 years fishing NPH here and haven't found a place that is access denied yet. From the shore is a different ball game.
