Pendalton 9/11 - 9/12

Went out 9-11 & 9-12.
9/11:
Had a company trip fishing trip planned for Saturday. Got the boat out of the slip at 7am (out of Newport Harbor) and got to the bait barge. Got some nice dines that sunk right to the bottom of the tank as soon as they hit the water. Headed down to the domes and saw a few boats parked (along with the Freelance) with no bent rods. Well maybe a few with Bonita and mackeral. I got on the radio and went to Ch. 72 and asked for a report on the domes. A skipper called up and said "the bite is about 5 miles down from the domes. A steady pick on Yellowtail 10-25#'s. They are biting macks really good right now & a little slower on the dines & jigs. Just look for 150 boats in 1 spot". So I caught a few macks while we where at the domes and we headed down towards Pendalton. We get down there and there really is 150 boats are parked together. IS THIS THE FLATS WITH A SANDBASS BITE GOING ON?? The macks I made were inhaled and lost instantly. All those macks for 1 Yellowtail about 10#'s. We ended up with 5 Yellowtail to 25#'s and lost a dozen. Good day!

9-12:
Was so excited about Saturday. Had to take my boat out Sunday. A couple of friends & I got down to Pendalton and it was the same thing. 150 boats and Yellowtail boiling everywhere. We ended up with 3 sandbass, 1 calico, several barracuda, and a few farmed Yellowtail. The bite completely shut off at about 10:30 am. Nothing was being caught. We decide to run offshore for hopes of dodo's or Yellow Fin Tuna maybe a Yellowtail out there. We get to about the 267 and hadn't seen 1 paddy yet. We start trolling and find a school of porpose and troll through them a few trimes for nothing. We hear on the radio "wide open dodo's on the 209". We all lokk at each other and say lets try. I try to get some #'s but couldn't get a response. We get within 8 mi of the 209 and try again. Nothing . Decide to look around there for a paddy. Work the area for an hour and decide to head in. We find 1 paddy and get all excited. We do our drifts for nothing and then I see something swimming about 10' below the boat. My friend bruce was working on a rats nest after trying to cast and he says he's bit?? I look and the rod is bent, I get the rats nest out and hand him the rod. It comes back a 20# mako Hey at least we caught something. All fished were released today!

That was me :-)

I went 4 for 4 on the only 4 greenbacks I had bothered to jig-up just outside the jetty at Dana Harbor. They were foamed and boiled on the minute they hit the water, while the bite was much slower...but steady...on dinos.

If I were fishing there tomorrow I would cruise right by the bait reciever and just load up on macks just north of Dana harbors mouth right up tight to the rocks.

The only problem is that most of the Yellowtail off pendleton have been closer to 10 than 20 pounds, and you really gotta let them chew the big bait. And even then for me at least it has been a farm-festival...

I appreciate that very much. You saved our trip! It was going to be nothing but mackeral, bonita, and short barries at the domes. I told the owner about what you told me and he said "I don't think we can go down that far". After the Freelance left us and started to head down there he asked "Does anybody have to be home early?" We all said no and off we went! I really want to say thanks! You hooked us up with a great bite, especially for the rookies that were on the boat (they were from Vegas). They had a blast fighting Yellowtail's on coffee-grinders for 25 min. Thanks again Quietman.........we appreciated it!

P.S. - Is D.P. where you mainly launch from? We should hook up sometime and do the BB thing. Do you ever run offshore from D.P?

P.S.S. - 1 fish caught on Mackeral, 2 on sardines, and 2 on a Ironman #2 - scrambled egg
