IB Scouting Trip 5/13

Since I heard about all the good calico bass fishing in the kelp lately I wanted to scout out the IB Pipe and International/Pt Loma artificial reef. The wind was very light in the am and I wanted to see how fast I could get there from M C R D. I averaged 29-30mph on my GPS and it took about 35 min and 3 gal of gas to get to the buoy with a flag on it in 100'. My gps said it was about 13.5 miles as the crow flys. I found lots of fish on the meter in the area that were probably sand bass. I threw all kinds of lead and plastics at them but couldn't get a bite. I left there in search of the artifical reef from my numbers but couldn't find it in 160' or any buoys in the area to mark it. I don't have my gps with me as I'm writing this. I only had another 3 gal of gas left so I headed back towards IB and came back slower about 12mph and stopped in 85' finding lots more sand bass but no biters. Metered bass all the way back to the strand. Headed over to buoy #3 and got one almost legal barry then over to the kelp for 2 micro calicos. Went over to the tip of the jetty and finally picked up a 3# calico on a yellow lead jig. Threw him in the bucket to take home with a bunch of others but was not ment to be. After about 15 minutes of nothing left for the ramp. Rememberd about the bass in the bucket and didn't want to only take home one fish. I checked him and found he was still alive. Added water to the bucket and kept moving him around for about 3 minutes and he was able to go home ok.

Does anyone have some good numbers for the artifical reef at the border? And has anyone ever done any good there?
