| LJ 4/26 Mr. T and friends...
Hello everyone!
First of all I would like to thank everyone for their posts including fishing reports, tips, and stories. I have been active on this site for a couple of months but this will be my first post. I recently purchased a 1992 18 ft Robalo and have made about 6-8 trips to La Jolla. I have been kayak fishing La Jolla for the last three years with my fishing partner Joe Raby. He is the only one out of my friends who eats drinks and sleeps fishing. I love the kayak but wanted to have more range with less back pain.
On Sunday we launched from Mission Bay at around 5:45 AM and made it to LJ around 6:15. The fog was thick and we had to rely on the GPS for navigation. We started with a drift NW of the kelp in about 90-120 ft of water. After about an hour we had picked up a mixed bag of bottom critters including a sand bass, 3 sculpin, a calico, one red and 3 short lings. We then decided to troll about 100 yards off the kelp line down to the reserve buoy and back. On the way to the reserve buoy we had one strike that unbuttoned when we tryed to stick em. We kept trolling and right out in front of the hotel the trolling stick starts screaming. This was a big fish and was not fighting like a yellow or WSB. We all thought T-shark and we were right. The fish made a few strong runs and we had him hooked good in the tail with a blue rapala. We had him up next to the boat about 4 times with tail in hand. We could not stop looking at the rapala as it whipped from side to side and hoping that one of us would not get stuck. After a few battles we had him tailed good and released him as the tail sliced through the line. We then trolled for another hour and decided to look for flatties in front of Blacks beach. We got one octopus that had beaked a huge hole in the live bait. Released him and went back to the kelp and picked up a couple of bonita and some more bottom critters including a four foot soupfin shark. We then ended the day out in front of the Mission Bay channel. There was one sport boat close by and we decided to anchor. Lucky drop because we yanked out about 19 lings from 23 inches to 29 inches. They were hitting the live bait on almost every drop.
This was a great day on the water and was mostly due to fishing with competent anglers who know how to have a good time. We had exceptional teamwork between myself, Joefish and Corbina Corbin. Thanks to the both of you. I cant think of anything better than fishing with good friends on a beautiful day and talking story over a couple of beers. See ya next weekend on the water and dont be scared to get an update on Ch 72
Total fish count:
1 sand bass
1 calico
1 red
1 tree fish
1 octopus
1 soupfin shark
3 sculpin
2 bonita
22 SHORT ling cod
1 Thresher shark

The T-shark was just a teenager. I would say about 90-100 pounds but full of life.
Thank you again for all the info.

Hey Leo, Joe told me about your new boat. Congrats. Hows the engine running? Kep and I talked Joe in to running long once the fish come in... Be ready for your first trip offshore in that boat SOON!

Yeah, But how do ya cut them up? We were all thinking about that while we tried to figure out how to secure this beast without bringing it on board. So much shit going on at once, we had the full-on fire drill going, damn that was fun!!
