Hey guys,
Traveling
Up Along the Palo Verde Coastline!
Rode Pierpoint Landing’s ¾-day local moo-moo
Victory yesterday … Wednesday. Mike is her day-in-day-out skipper and ran the boat while 1st deck Jason worked the deck and Ron who keeps the galley cookin’. Fished the Palo Verde area. Still just 17 of us had the 90-angler boat to ourselves.
Roundup Note:
Tuesday the Victory, with 17 anglers, caught 1 Halibut, 10 Calico Bass, 80 Sand Bass, and 15 Sculpin.
Target Fish: Calico, Sandbass, Sculpin, and Perch Short Report- Wednesday 02/07
Today: 17 anglers caught 9 Calicos, 66 Sandies, 1 Sargo, and 25 Perch. We also got a couple of legal Sculpin that slipped through the count somehow. But … again …. I say that doesn’t tell the reader how much fun it was to catch fish …. in the count or not !! Released lots of fish due to being short (Bass) or out of season (Sheephead).
(Please widen your view to fit monitor if word-wrap looks off) Wednesday 02/07 Jackpot Weigh-In ………….Winner!
Huge Underdog
An underdog fishy took the Jackpot today. The 2lb fish was caught on fresh-dead Squid. With live Squid unavailable, fresh-dead was the next-best thing and most catches were being made on them. Let’s just hope the floats continue on into the next month!
Oh yes ..... winning fishy is held in the angler's right hand.

What a beautiful boat! Man o’ man …. that is some beautiful vessel. Poor thing was so loaded down with it’s haul of squid that she sat deeeeep in the water.

Finding Fish
Today we headed up the line along the Palo Verde coastline. We never made it all the way to Rocky Point but fished points between Point Fermin and Point Vincente. Lots of different species with a pretty good bite on Sandbass. No WSB this trip ….. not even shorts.
I have a sneaking suspicion that SOMEBODY is using some of the live Squid to go up along the Redondo Canyon and catching big WSB but it’ kept quiet! Too many Squid boats up there netting the squirters for the croakers not to be attracted.
Out to Pasture Moo-moos Danny’s Boat ………………...Nice Boat ……………............... Another

Hanging Out!
2 Rounds Round 1 With the water shallow and the bottom pretty rough, not much weight was needed to keep lure or bait down near thebottom. Most used whole fresh-dead and fished either a leadhead or slider rig for whole squid and cut bait on dropper loops. A number of guys were fishing just has hard with cut squid-strips too. One had to keep pretty alert due to the sticky bottom and pretty wide swing of the boat.
Caught all the usual out-of-season suspects only to have to return them to the water. We never did see any Barracuda or Bonito breezing by but did find a few Mackerel.
Conditions: Overcast most of the day. Water temps were 55º~57º. Not much wind but the shift in direction was pretty noticable. Downhill current but things did change things going uphill so to speak. Water clarity was pretty good at maybe 10 to 15 feet.
Air temp stayed in the 60ºs except in the very early mornings it was colder. Jackets pretty much stayed on during the day.
Round 2 Although we moved a total of say 5 or 6 times, the general depth and type of structure remained similar. Size of fish did not seem to vary much and I’m sure that was one of the reasons we did the moving we did and not just ‘wait-out’ a couple of spot with the marks and potential.
Saw Danny’s Squid boat out waiting on the evening Squid float. Hope he’s making some money this season after selling the Premier.
Conditions: Still cool with conditions about the same as the first round …. Exactly the same as last week which was about like the week before! We could get down to our last layer of clothes for about half an hour and then it was the exact reverse!! Ha ha ha

Let Them Know
The photos above are just a sample of the fish and things of interest, at least to me, on this week’s trip.
Note: If you see a friend in the pictures, let them know they can copy the photo off the report, save, edit, and print it at their leisure. Plastics Today’s Menu
Plastics ….Calicos
Fished for Calicos 90% of the time with some success today in one of the worst areas imaginable for fishing plastics. Worst you say ??….. yes kind readers …. the coastline of PV is, generally speakng, some of the most productive areas for plastics as well as the most prolific in terms of biomass but …. shallow water, small, Razor-edged reefs, rogue kelp stringers, tear-aways, lobster traps/floats/ropes and then there is the wind and current ……….often effected by the near-by beach geography that make the area tough to fish ….. on a big moo-moo!
All that said …. I love it and I’m sure the tackle stores love these trips too as I loose enough gear to upgrade their next trip to Baja!!
Due to the draft of the moo-moo and maneuverability, we are not able to fish most of the area as productively as our PBer brethren …… especially the blow-up boats!
I used no more than 3/8oz leadheads for the few swimbaits I used and 1/2oz for the tube, squiddy, jerk-it sluggo-type, and beaver-tail plastics.
Tweeking Plastics #23
Am now in the process of making a fake Sanddab. Hint: it ain’t made from metal or plastic.
Wednesday Out There Lunar ………………………………………Wind Direction and Speed!
Tides ………………………………………………..............Water Temps!
Wednesday’s Conditions Fishing Grounds: The air-temperature at boarding was in the low-50’s, might have gotten all the way to the mid-60’s later in the day. Needless to say, we all wore a couple of jackets, had beanies, hats, what-ever’s most the entire day.
Wild Creatures: No Sealions today. Sneaky Seagulls, cavorting Cormorants (who grab any plastic), and patient, picky Pelicans were around most of the day.
Asides: Aside: You’ll notice a guy with a rod bent big-time in the gallery. With the heavy gear Ted was using, and the way the fish was running i.e. long, sustained runs … while staying way down where hooked, and lastly traveling up the boat to the bow, there was 95% chance it was a BSB. Sure been catching a lot of them recently. Average 2 4~5lb babies a trip!
Another Aside: It’s time to start counting down to the start of the Fred Hall show here in Long Beach. This year promises to be even more interesting to the angler and boater with the yet-increased seminars and display of fishing goods and services. Starts on the 7th of March. That’s a Wednesday at 2pm. Google for the FH website and details.
Yet Another Aside Forgot to put it in the report but I used my old squid-head trick. I can just about win money on a bet with this one. Take a Carolina rig sliding egg sinker setup with a very small circle hook + Squid head wo/collar hooked twice but second stick gets buried between the eyes and inside + just laying the thing on the bottom = Sheephead! 2 drops 2 Sheephed in 5 minutes. That proved my point and went back plastic fishin'!!
Useful Information Stern Shots
I have posted the stern rail numbers and the color sections of the boat for two past reports. In subsequent reports on this boat, I will not post the graphics again but have you refer to the report for the 11/22 trip for the visual reference. The Victory’s 5 color sections (red, green, yellow, blue, and white) each have 18 numbers going clock-wise 1 to18.

Trip’s End
Today, the skipper, crew, buddies from my club, and others worked hard, caught fish and had a good bit of fun. We were off the boat by 5:00 and I was home in half an hour.
