I went out last night on the New Seaforth...FUN TIMES!!! Those squid were HUGE!
It's kinda like yo-yo jigging but you just reel back up slowly -- not fast like you would with yellowtail.
At first, the squid were at the bottom and we had to drop down to the bottom which was close to 1500' . After squid started coming on board, they came progressively closer to the boat and were getting picked up on drops down to about 450' and as little as 200'.
The big squid jigs weigh about 1.5# and there's no casting involved. Ideally, a short stiff rod about 50# class like you'd use for dropper loop or heavy yo-yo fishing.
Reeling in one of these things is like dragging up a sea anchor so a powerful, low gear ratio reel is best. My Trinidad 40 with 4:1 was good -- a 2 speed avet LX would probably be perfect for this.
Drop the jig down and if it stops, you're on. Reel in steady, don't pump. If you drop to the bottom, or whatever depth they say the squid should be and you don't get picked up, just start winding back up a ways slowly, then let 'er drop down again.

Nice job Randall! Crystal (gonebendo) and I are going out tonight on the New Seaforth for some of that action.
For anyone who is wondering about gear you need a short stiff rod (5'5"-6' ft) and 50-60lb test. The 1.5 lb jigs are working the best! I hope I see some of you out there!

Thanks for the info. . When are those coming up to Orange County? and where do they hang out up here? I know last year they were catching some up here out of Dana and Newport. I would like to pull on a couple of those 30 pounders. Caught smalller ones around 10-15 pounds right in front of Newport Harbor. Maybe 500 yards out. The bigger ones seem like a great way to test your tackle! Tight lines!

Just got off the phone with my buddy who lives in Dana, theres very slim spots of them off the domes maybe 7-10 miles out directly off the domes. He said it's straight hit and miss as they arent quite here yet. I'm not going to chance it until i hear better reports otherwise. But thats good news none the less. Ohh yah they are smaller size as well 10-15 lbs. Nothing big like the ones in SD.
