Got the invite to fish catalina 9-19. We were out of HH about 4:15am. Both bait recievers were still dark. This made snagging mackeral difficult. The guy at bills was just awake and sold us some dines. Arrived at the Isthmus area just after sunrise. We were soaking dines for Yellowtail but did not see any signs. To pass the time I rigged a dropper-loop and a #2 hook on my #12 bass rod. We had a steady pick on various rock fish and sheephead using small strips and chuncks. Then something large takes the bait. I was thinking ray or maybe a small BSB. The fish makes several runs and actually gets into some structure momentarily. Finally started gaining line and up comes a nice little Yellowtail. Somehow managed to hook him just above the eye. I do not know why he snubbed his nose at the sardine only a few feet away on proper tackle. I'm still learning new things every trip. We ended up landing 2 out of 4 hookups on the Yellowtail for the day. Good showing on the Calico and small shallow water rock fish.
when the shallows get a bit cooler they will eat cut bait we would catch a lot of 2 lb fish when codding back in the day it was fun to catch 5 yellows at a time wtg on the cat yellows
