Carlsbad lagoon yakin

Lanched at about 9:30 in the carlsbad lagoon and paddled over to the bridge just under the 5 freeway. The in coming tide was moving alot of water. There was one asshole in a wakeboard boat that felt the need to pull his ride through the 5mph zone and within casting distance of me. That made if really had to get set up so over tho the west side of the 5 freeway.
Caught 4 short halibut and 8 SBB. The biggest was the one in the pic then the cameria died. Once the tide went slack the bite slowed. Off the water at 11:30 for yard work

Re: Carlsbad lagoon yakin

Cool, can you fish in the Lagoon (west of the 5) in a yak?

I hit it from shore a few times a week during my lunch. Lots of shorts: hali, SBB, SB. You ever fish it?

Love that lagoon. Some big halibut in there occasionally.

Well, here's the dealio. You can fish the part just west of I-5 (YMCA Lagoon) with no problem, but I don't think it's that productive. On an incoming tide, you can drift east (incoming tide) under I-5 through the reef and kill some huge fish, but you have to deal with the rental jet skis and wake boarders (so go early or late). So after 5pm or before noon is ideal (except on weekends). Once the Carlsbad Patrol boat is around, you can only fish the lagoon in the non-transit areas or Passive Use Area. In either case, once the Patrol Boat is around, you're gonna need a use permit from the City of Carlsbad.

Here's a link from one of my sites.

I grew up fishing those lagoons and bristol cove, you'd be surprised how good the fishing can be especially on the opeleye under the bridge.

Lagoon can be fun, esp. on the incoming tide at the overpass, until we got ran out by the skiers and wake boarders long ago.
The lad's first sleigh ride came when he was 3, hooked into a sizable bat ray at the back of the lagoon. Hope since it's changed hands they will be more lenient.
Have heard of some nice sized halis caught there though...
