| Santa Cruz Is. 11/15
Fished Saturday 11/15 with Larry Heron on the Calico Hunter III at Santa Cruz. Our goal was to catch calicos for a research project being conducted by Kim Selkoe, a grad student up here at UCSB. She is using small samples of fin tissue to look at population genetics. Anyway, the three of us headed out around 5:45 and fought through the slop over to the western half of the island. Fishing was very slow. We did manage to C&R 26 bass, with three fish over 3 lbs., biggest at 4 lbs. caught by Larry. All fish caught on 4 and 5 inch Big Hammers, with Calico Hunter, Calico Hunter/red flake, and clear/red flake producing the best. Weather was marginal, fishable up close to the island but bumpy on the ride there and back (10-20 knots of wind, no ground swell, 3-5 ft. wind chop). The water was very, very clean (20-40 ft. visibility), which we think was the main contributor to the slow bite.
