Bone Fish, Bass, and Butts 4-28-06...

Fished SD Bay today from 0900 to 1300. I really wanted to catch a bone fish BAD so when a friend asked me to join him on the bay and said he had a few "spots" that have been hot lately I couldn't refuse the invitation.

I brought the trout rig spooled up with fresh 4#, and off we went. I have never targeted Bone Fish before so this was all new. We had a couple dozen ghost shrimp...I guess these things are like candy for the bones. We rigged up dropper loops with a 1/4 oz sinker, and started our drift. My buddy tells me if you feel anything, the tiniest little bump set the hook. As soon as the words were out of his mouth I get bumped, and swing. I'm on baby, and it's the right kind! The drag was screaming for about 10 seconds, and then my line goes slack. DAMN IT! But...I'm not worried...if I got hooked up that quick it shouldn't be long till I get another right? NOT TODAY! We moved around that same general area until we exhausted the ghost shrimp supply. Nailed 4 croakers, one pretty nice one that must have went 2 pounds, and a couple of micro Sandies.

Moved across the bay and started throwing plastics for some bass. It was wide open fishing for the next hour and a half. We were drifting the north side back bay in about 15 feet of water. Temp was right at 67, and the bass were feeding heavy. A rough estimate I would say between 60 and 70 bass. Bo got a bone fish on the 3" MC Plastic ghost shrimp...which was the hottest color today. We did pretty good with the lime green, clear, with orange egg sack as well. That one produced two butts for me as well. One micro, and one 25 1/2" that went a little over 7 pounds. Great fight on the 4# to say the least. Had the ultra light doubled over, and drag screaming.

A lot of the bass were dinks but we did manage 16 or 17 legals with a few 15+ inchers in the mix. Everything went back to be caught another day...well almost everything...one butt came home, and was quickly filleted in the alley behind the shop. Grilled butt for dinner for me and momma. Sure hope we don't start glowing from any contaminated crap...it did come out of the back bay .

Thanks for the invite Bo...had a blast, and can't wait to get another shot at the elusive bone fish. Thanks to Don as well for covering the store so I could get out there.
