Secondhand report from my boatmate Kraig (C-diddy) who just called. Diddy was on the trip where we bagged that monster 30# flattie last Friday (6/27 SD Bay: FlattieFest), but wussed out and didn't come out with us when we got another one on Monday (6/30 SD Bay: "I like Big Butts and I can not lie...").

Today, he was looking to pick up one of his own to put on the grill for today's 4th Fiesta.

He fished from 5:30am until around 9:30 am, starting on the inside of the jetty for nothing but a spottie. Moved over to the outside an hour later, and picked up a nice 25 inch legal halibut on the first drop using a sliding sinker rig.

I think he said he had another shorty or two before they had to head back, but I wasn't really listening any more because I was hacked off he took the boat out without me. No, only kidding; I'm stoked he finally got a legal on our boat, though I might "miss" the gaff on his next fish...

That's all you get for your money today.

He said the fish were DEFINITELY on the chew on the outside.

However, the only bait EB had left was monster 'dines (this was at 5am), and he was getting short bit all day long. He didn't have any trap hooks with him -- the one legal he landed was actually foul hooked on a small patch of skin.

So, if you're heading out this weekend and EB doesn't have any of the smaller baits and you find yourself short bit, bring some trap hooks (treble hooks) or give the swimbaits a try.
