Just returned from a KHMC meeting with Phil of 976tuna telling us he thought the water was warming too much for the squid and thus the WSB may have already passed us by. Not sure if he is right or not, but I think this weekend will tell a lot since we should have good weather. Am thinking about setting up an open party charty to circumnavigate the island in search of WSB. Could be fun, we always catch something interesting on such trips. The cost would be $210 per angler leaving and returning to Avalon. If you have any thoughts about visiting Avalon for the weekend and want to fish Saturday. let me know...any takers? For those of you who do not know the boat you can check it out at www.afishinados.com |

I am with you, I think this weekend will tell all! There will plenty of us charter guys at the island and light boats looking for Squid, although they will eat the fresh dead just about as good! We are in high hope it is just getting ready to start!

Simple solution, as the squid starts moving out to deeper cooler water the WSB are still at the island. True, the WSB like the squid pre spawn since squid is 100% protein and digests quickly and easily. The fish still have to eat and they do eat large fin baits quite well. This doesnt always mean load your tank with dines, many times you are better off making bait in the areas you plan on fishing to match your bait with whats natural in those specific areas.
Dont forget as the water warms, keep an outfit ready to go with a light/surface iron. The big white tady 77 is the idea jig for these big croakers when fishing areas with lots of structure.
There are reasons that the top WSB fisherman catch these big fish year round. They adapt to the ever changing conditions and dont say to themselves, ah the fish have moved on to places unknown, I will drag jigs offshore for albies, they change their approach to fishing WSB and are rewarded with trophy fish.

Whoollly Crap! Now the WSB are on the Adkins Diet?!
Hey Jack, you think they might eat them 'cause they're slow, taste yummy and when they come in there are a bazillion of them? I'll let you know next week if I see any. We are planning a two day out there with the dive gear. I'm hoping to shoot one, we'll see.

After trying to accomplish too much in too little time overtown, I arrived in Avalon around 2:30 this afternoon. My boat was still floating and my skiff was still attached, however, the recent storm/winds blew things up pretty good. Broken cleat and scarred railing on my skiff. Not to worry, the light boats, three of them, were at anchor outside Pebbly Beach, "Good sign", I thought to myself. I mentioned it to a couple island boyz and the prevailing opinion was that they were setting up for the weekend. Turned on the freezer in the garage, put a couple ice chests into the skiff and went out to get them filled with fresh dead. "Where'd they go?" The light boats were gone. All of them! Bummer. Not sure if they left the island or headed backside. Could not raise them on the radio. I will check again in the morning and file a report for the weekend. Still open to the idea of prefishing the island for the WSB Tourney if there are any takers for Saturday.

I have two guys that want to prefish the WON derby this week. They can go Monday or Tuesday. I have four slots open at $225 per person. We will leave from San Pedro. Call me at 323-447-4669 or go on my site to check out the boat at www.afishinados.com Bring your hand held GPS and lets circle the island to check the local population of WSB.

Saw you at Cat Saturday evening. You backed up to Seal Rock between us (tan 26' Blackman) and some other big boat. Appeared you're only reason for sliding in there was so some passenger could take some pictures of the fur bags having an orgy laying out in the surf? You yelled something at us about the Yellowtail having gone off at Clemente.
So, hear of any WSB? It turned into a 160nm ride and overnight on the hook for a bunch of mud marlin and leopard shark for us. And the water wasn't really too warm yet imho. But not a WSB to be found.

I had a couple who chartered me for a little tour around the island. No fishing, just sightseeing. Can't turn down those charter customers. When I saw your boat I had just gotten word from a buddy fishing Clemente. In his words, "never had better yellowtail fishing than today".
