JL lings/reds, 7/1

Left MB at 0600 for LJ canynon for reds. about 10 miles. Got limit at 120 ft just at the top of the dropoff. Went into the kelp about .8 miles away to make bait. As I was setting the anchor with motor off, see a 30+ # WSB about 5 feet from the bow and about a foot underwater. Since I did not buy any live bait spent the next 2 hours getting 5 sargo and 1 big mack for ling bait. Next time I'll buy sardines. Headed to my secret hole, arrived 4 miles later to 5 other boats. Guess it ain't or never was a secret. Out of all those baits caught one 27" ling. Used a few other dead little fish for the second at 29". No scale. Had lunch and departed by noon. Did not get a chance to fish the deep water but ate the bait, shrimp with rockcod instead. Was looking for Branman to share a bite.

Misuse

Fished just outside the kelp for ling. I put the coord. in another thread. Worked best around patches of kelp on bottom at 90 ft. Used 80# spider wire, 2 ft 50# leader, 8/0 circle hook. Got broke off twice. Some big rascals down there.

Aw, c'mon Howie! Call ME the next time Branman no-shows for shrimps on the Q!

Nice to see some bottom critters on the deck again after all this time. Sweeeet.

Surprised there weren't more lings caught today... hoping to get a fatty myself tomorrow.

How do you fish for those big lings around the kelp in PL, bait, hooks, line# and method?

Since i fish outside the kelp line exclusively for lings in LJ (32 48/117 18 area), mostly in the open except for a few isolated hidden underwater kelp forests, I use large bait, line#, weights and hooks. I let them run with the bait for about 30 seconds so need the big stuff to pull them out of their lair and thru the kelp. I usually do not hook anything less than 22" because of the size of the baits. Broke off twice yesterday with 50# leader so going to use up some of my old 125# leader for tomorrow's trip. Main line is 80# spiderwire. Use the boat to break off snags.
