I caught a swimming crab free diving on the Balboa Peninsula goofing off in a school of Sardines. He was living in an giant empty muscle shell. I pinched the shell closed and brought him up to the house. We put him in our SW aquarium where he would swim around or hide in the rocks. The Moray Eel spotted him one day and that was all she wrote.

looks like our Texas Blue Crab - no discernible difference.
Normally 3 or 4 to a per person for dinner.

Thanks for the crab info and replys. Never seen one of them suckers untill that night. Pretty cool seeing something new. Also it was about the size of my hand. Would be cool if we got an influx of blue crabs, I'd like to try some of them suckers.

I like the late night hoopin thru the early morning. Didn't see one other boat around or near me hoopin all night. Just how I like it , quiet and no drama. Plus sleep is highly overated !!! For me it's fish, eat and sleep in that order .

IB , stop by anytime. It's always cool to talk about fishing and hoopin and what works for the different guys. Pluss there's no better place to get the hot dope on whats happen'en and working.

26G, there's a fine line between harcore and stupid and sometimes I'm not sure what side of the line I'm on

I was out on a kayak last night in SMB. Most of the waves early in the evening were okay, spare the odd unexpected 4 footers.

Comparing that monsters to the legal is amazing. That would be worth the work.

I grew up a stones throw from SD Bay. When I was a kid and pumping Ghost Shrimp, there was a crab species that looked just like that little blue swimmer, but they were 6-8 inches wide at the carapace, huge! They probably weighed a 1/2 pound or more and where mean. They would pinch your toes hard as you waded along; they were buried in the bottom.

They would swim sideways with one claw tucked in and the other trailing behind. Something happened, either they were harvested to a point that they could not reproduce anymore or the sediments changed from sandy to muddy, but they vanished.

I have caught the little ones in my hoops, but the big ones in the shallows are gone. I don't know if the two are the same species or not.

I've often wondered what happened to them. I haven't seen them in 15 years, maybe longer.

Does anyone else remember those huge blue swimmer crabs in SD Bay between, SWYC and SDYC?

Wow didn't know there where that of those blue pointer crabs around. Ever try one of those two pinching suckers??

Also, the big lobster is in a 100qrt ice chest and that is a no measure keeper next to it.

Nice! Did you weigh it? Lobster pics are deceiving, my biggest so far is about 7.5lbs and when I saw the picture of it it looked like 4.

Got to love the local hooping for the toads, ive never seen one over 6 at the island and that was rare.

Haven't weighed any of the ones caught on my boat the past year or two. Going to try and bring our shop digital scale and a basket to put the lobster in and weigh them on the boat and then release them. It was about 6-7lb. Not a true monster but big enough . Think I'm going to be releasing anything much bigger than that from now on. wife and son and all my buddies like the smaller one for easy cooking and eating. Looking forward to heading back out in a couple days. Moons fading and the tides are good.
