[QUOTE=UnReel;1535513]S/H , ling fishing is killer and I herd the same thing about the meat color, diet based. Used to fish for them up by Half Moon Bay with a family friend of my moms who lived up in San Jose. We'd make sanddabs and pour our own concrete weights using dixy cups so it wasn't so costly when we got rocked. Way bigger models up north. Good luck at Cat, hope you find a few on your next trip. OH, by the way, I got both my ling hookups on a whole squid fished on a single dropper loop rig with a 6/0 hook and 6oz torpedo.

UnReel:

Thanks for the added information on the set-up. I typically use Jax jigs and tag on a whole squid for the yo yo action. I'll try your set-up as well. BTW, you're right, RF caught in the central coast are typically larger models. Can't wait to sink a hook on a fat ling. After seeing your post, I'm fired up to get on some RF and bonito with a ling or two.

Nice report Behdad!! ,cant wait till sat to get out on my first of the season. How did you like the ambusher nets compared to the danielsons? I took a good look at one and they look real nice. Glad to see there will be lots of bait to be made over there, thanks.

Heading to Cat to hoop tomorrow night. Can anyone give me a report on making bait where the bones or macs are and what they were bitting. Any info would be much appreciated.

Curtis, making bait shouldnt be a problem right now as I hear its been pretty easy.

What I like to do is meter around an area in 50- 80 ft and look for some sort of life on the meter ,then drop a chum bucket ( newfishall) then wait for the macks to show up.

Take a sabiki rig with #4 hooks and put a little squid or mack skin on it to get it started then usually they go stupid and you wont need to bait them again .

The nice thing about the chum bucket is that it will usually bring in the bonita and bass down line behind the macks, and if you have live chovies you can have a real good bonita bite.

Good luck out there, watch the FOG!

Thanks again guys. That light line rockfishing is a blast. Being able to use a 15-40lb rated rod (Phenix PSW868) with a TLD10 loaded with 65 green PP spectra makes even the rockfish fight like calicos and the lings, oh man !!!! Fun stuff forsure and the freezer looks killer right now . Looking forward to doing it again soon.

BIG macks and the bigger Bonies where around Johnson Rock full speed and just above the Ismus there where schools of the smaller 1 to 3lb bonies puddling around on the surface.

IB , diggin the new Ambush nets. They pull up well (small overall diamter) and being able to zip tie the bait cages to the inside bait pouch ring is a huge pluss as our Danielson nets where tearing around the zip ties that hold our bait cages on. Previously I had to keep repairing our Danielson nets after each trip as we had more and more frayed nylong net breaking.
