Chillin and Killin on the Capt Ron Point Loma Variety Show Trip to Descanso Oct 18

The Captain Ron Freelance Variety Show continues on the Point Loma with the BD Special trip to ffice:smarttags" />Descanso Bay!
fficeffice" />
The trip was planned for BDers to include a run down to Descanso in search of a variety of fish. We had a group of 21 with mostly BDers and included Otto who is Cycader’s son who was looking forward to this trip before heading to speak at the MLPA mtg. in Long Beach this week. The weather was cool and cloudy but we did get a couple of hours of sun mid-afternoon and fairly smooth water along the way.
We loaded the boat, settled in for the long ride and were on our way.

We stopped at a very large paddy but no one was home so we continued onward. We stopped at an area just before Descanso Bay and John, the Galley cook got a hookup and handed it off to Otto. Very cool move John! Otto was into it and brought in a very nice rockfish and then John called Otto back and handed off another time so that Otto could bring in his very first sheepshead:

Well he was hooked on fishing and there was no stopping Otto after that! He was pulling in fish on his own left and right and the crew, both John and Brian both worked hard to get Otto on some fish the rest of the day! Otto was doing so well on his own that we suggested he show his dad how to fish. Here is Cycader bringing in his first catch of the day with Spyder cheering him on!

Soon after, Spyder catches his first of many species of the day…

Well Surfdoc doesn’t want to be left out so he brings out his secret weapon – Unibutter and prepares to compete with the rest…

Mikeylikesit gets in on the action and brings in a nice rattler!

At that point several of us are bringing in rattlers left and right! Brian was running up and down the rail to keep everyone from bringing them over the rail and getting them into our bags.

We moved from spot to spot if we didn’t find anyone home and we had the dawgs on our tail most of the day. Here are some more pics taken at various stops…

We caught so many varieties of fish, lots of rockfish and rattlers, several lings but most lings were just a bit short, several bonita, calico bass, sugar bass, etc. Here are some pictures taken in order as the fish were caught near me while we fished…

We had several double hook-ups too…

We also planned a potluck event and there was plenty of food for all! Mikeylikesit brought some of Val’s famous tuna jalapeno poppers, Captain Ron brought Deena’s albacore tuna spread which he walked around the boat and served to us on crackers while we fished at the rail, Mono Malo and his girlfriend brought some smoked fish and brownies and rice krispy treats, John (JV1845) brought tons of sandwiches, Jeremy made a Chinese chicken salad, Cycader made a macaroni salad, Stan brought sushi and edamame, Spyder brought a bunch of chips/pretzels, I don’t remember what the others brought specifically, and I brought homemade pumpkin walnut bread and a homemade cheesecake. Let’s just say it was some “killer cheesecake! CMike aka Mike was enjoying some of the sushi Stan brought and popped a rice ball into his mouth and it lodged in his throat. He went to take a large bite of his cheesecake to force down the rice and the cheesecake was so thick it lodged in this throat too and he was having a very tough time. Margie came to the rescue and stayed with him to help. It took Mike quite awhile to work through this but he did. Here is Mike reliving the story of how the food was so killer…

I had a great time! Captain Ron and his crew – Brian and John worked hard to make this trip a great success. (Yes, they wanted to check everyone’s drag and their rigs so they would be more successful! I busted Stan and Mikey and pointed them out as the troublemakers of the trip to the crew!) On this trip, we moved from spot-to-spot when needed to find the fish. The guys took extra care to see who hadn’t caught a fish so they could make sure everyone got on some fish and they gave extra attention to Otto to make sure he had a successful trip too! When Otto was asked how he was doing, he replied with, “I’m just chillin and killin!” That became the quote of the day! Otto made limits and had to stop fishing!

It was nice to meet more BDers in person and have a fun trip and potluck to share. What a fun way to spend the day! Sorry if I missed your name in this post, please chime in and add your pics and post.

And your point is ??? Hell I could have gone to Tommy's and limited on Swordfish and Scallops.

This was a killer trip that checked NEW stones down the coastline... fuck that alone was worth the price of admission.

Fishing the Rockpile is like Jerking off. Ya know it's always available!

But sometimes Ya need to get off the tit and find something better !

A very nice trip indeed. Not that I would remember much on the way down and back cause I was snoozin . Hey, I had to save up my energy to keep up with Otto the Fishslayer! My hats off to you young man

Some of the best shallow water rockfishing I have done, nice hard bottom. Fish were biting dines, squid, jigs, lures, anything ya dropped down. I caught my share of large reds, chuckleheads, barber poles, johnny bass, whitefeesh, etc. Was cool seeing everyone along the rail hooked up.

The food was awesome, I'm still full. Was great hanging out with you Otto, Simon, Stan, Mikey, Mike, John, Maggie, Alex and all the rest. When are we going again???
