| Pt Loma Kelpline 7/5
After a late nite celebrating the 4th got up late at 0600 and decided to go fishing. Down at the boat at 0700 and to the PL rockpiles at 0730 with a half scoop of horse sardines. Plan was to fish for lings for a Sweet & Sour lingcod dinner. Then go after the biting calico bass within the kelp. After 5 drifts of zippo changed tactics. Added a 2nd 1/0 Owner heavy duty treble hook on a 12" dropper loop about 3' above the lower one with 8oz sinker on bottom. 2nd drift finally get a bite. It was a GREENIE ling. My favorite tasting ling and it was a teenager (25") also the best eating. Next drift I get hammered. It was all I could do to keep the fish from rocking me. After turning it, it was a long haul up from 100'. I was only fishing with 20# test so had to monitor gain vs drag. I loosen the drag as I go up because of the "rubberband effect" of the line. I was expecting a 40" ling but to my surprise it was a big halibut. Laying the 6' large-mouthed gaff on the gunnels to the left of me I swam the halibut straight towards the boat. I one motion I gaffed her behind the gills, pulled her head just above the gunnels, dropped the rod and with two hands pulled her on board. She bled profusely and exploded with power when she hit the deck. She spattered blood everywhere even up to the front on my 21' boat. Good thing i had my bids on. She weighted it at 22lbs at 39" at the dock. Since I have not got my 800w inverter yet from an internet purchase to use the electric knife, i brought her in to fillet her at the dock. Would'ent ya know it all my dockie friends I usually never see at the boat were there and begged for a piece. Ended up giving about 2/3s of her away but still plenty left for dinner. Saw AFRY at his slip so stopped by to chat and volunteeringly gave him some including some ling for his mom who is coming into town. He tried for albies the day before but cuz of the weather could not go that far south.
Caught one more 25" whitey ling and called it a day at 1000. Stopped by the F&G in their 20' gray rubber boat on the way in.

Congrats HH!
That's a fine flattie and solo too. Funny how you always seem to attract a crowd when filleting them........
Thanks for sharing.

To settle this theory i'd had for over 20 years that green/blue lings taste better than whiteys I had an lingcod taste-testing feast back in 2004. I prepared the green & white lings two ways (my sweet & sour recipe and fried) but kept the identity of each secret to a group of unbiased taste testers (mom, brother, sister, Julie from next door and a few others i can not remember). They all chose the greenies from a fill out ballot i had. The ballot had check marks for categories of sweeter, less strong lingcod flavor, softer tectured meat, etc. So it is now official (in my official book) that green lings taste better than whiteys. http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/fi...r-lingcod.html (Sweet & Sour Lingcod)

Excellent report as usual, HH.
Since there are no pictures, we'll have to imagine we're chowing down on some of that sweet & sour lingcod.
