Seiners have wiped out more bites from La Jolla To Ventura with no disregard for local private boaters and especially the enviorment for years. When will this crap stop???
10 years ago, there were no seiners and one could catch fish on a squid nest for a month before it would spawn and fish would finally move on. Now a spawn never happens. Squid never has a chance to repopulate, hell even its eggs are torn apart by lead lined nets that scrap the sand. Bottom line, squid has come to the so cal region for millions of years untouched for all creatures of the sea to feed and flourish on. In the last 10 years these harvesters of destruction from as far north as Washington have come here and destroyed more biomass in 10 years than anything imaginable in a million years !!!!! If we must all pay for ocean enhancement stamps and obide by a limit of white seabass that is limited to 1 fish during the months of March 15th -June 15th to protect the species and its spawn, then why the hell do these nets get to kill all of its food source to ensure a healthy spawn during these same months ???????? Why???? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
For evry lb. of squid wrapped, the D.F.G makes a percentage. It's called a landing tax. The more squid that is wrapped, the moe $$$ the D.F.G makes !! Kind of ironic huh ? The commercial seiner fleet makes annual income for the D.F.G. where the sportfishing community only provides revenue from fishing licences and violatons resulting in huge fines. For this reason it is not only allowed, but incouraged. Add the politacal implications of impotation/exportation. Over 85% of the squid harvested in our local waters is exported to mostly Asian countries so that in turn. the U.S. will receive its importations. Its all about the $$$ !!!! These are merely the facts and we are all left dealing with them . God save us all !!!!!
I understand your anger, but for a first post newbie this is pretty good.

Take the time to read this board for a while before you make comments that will not help the cause. There is a war going over turf and shit like this does not help.

we need to bite our tongues?

recs are banding together with commercial entities and are being told by our "representatives" that "no commercial fishing allowed" SMCAs are bad for we recreational fishermen.

If the inevitable MPAs at Catalina & La Jolla were SMCAs (blue) instead of full-closure reserves (red), the commerical squidders will be gone. the commerical WSB harvesters will be limited to recreational "take limits". and the recs can fish for WSB & Yellowtail undisturbed. Granted, the halibut and calicos will need to be released, but is that such a bad thing when considering the commercially-preferred alternative of TOTAL CLOSURE and no fishing for everyone? Good partners those commercial guys are.

Looks to me like you had a pretty good day... I would have been a happy fisherman too with that catch. Good report on the fishing, however I will go a little off track and comment some on the squid seine. GetSome has posted some good information on how they operate, and it appears there were plenty fish left for you to catch. Just for more clarification back in March off La Jolla the squid fleet was working. Fishermen claimed as in this post there was no way the squid could spawn or survive. Divebums also thought this was the case so they went out for a look. The video of what they found is here: Squid Spawning Grounds Off La Jolla on Vimeo

Sorry to get off track, and the captain may have not been completely justified, but as long as fishermen keep bashing on each other (having attitude), pointing fingers/blame, and posting incorrect information about bycatch we will continue to be unable to deal with regulatory issues coming at us as all. "Can't we just all get along"

Once again thanks for the report looks like you had a great day.

Joe, great video, but I have to disagree with you. That they found squid eggs in LJ only shows what escaped the seins. A good friend who's a marine biologist at Scripps performed the underwater ROV studies precipitating the current regs on the commercial squid seiners. Their recommendations were for a limited commercial season, followed by a closure. Currently, they can wrap during the week, but not on weekends, which theoretically allows the squid to spawn on the weekends while the recs fish it. His view was that the seiners would just come in Sunday night dragging their seins on the bottom destroying all the eggs from the weekend spawn. That is exactly what is going on now. Sorry, but it is a great waste and travesty that is going on out there and I could give a rat's ass how much they make. When they set the quotas on the squid fishery, they took their highest year and added 20%. This is not headed in a good direction. That you are supportive of this fishery comes as no surprise giving whom you are allied with. You need to wake up and see what's really going on. As some pointed out there are boats from as far away as Alaska participating in this fishery, so not all of it is going into the local economy.

That the DFG makes money off landing taxes, does nothing for the resource. That system will just let them fish it into oblivion, which is precisely what led us to this point that they're imposing closures. Ask yourself why is it that one side of the DFG is supporting MPAs and another is backing commercial fisheries such as this squid fishery. The squid fishery will continue after the MLPA has been implemented, while the DFG's enforcement of rec activities will have gotten much easier from the deletion of a lot of prime territory. They retain the commercial landing tax revenue, while reducing their expenses for enforcement of rec fisheries. Again, you need to wake up and see reality.

Dang !!

So I guess that even if the anglers had been anchored up all night the seiner had the right to come along any time later and push them off their established anchor. Double Dang !

Guess the deal about sailboats NOT having the right of way when a boats anchored-logic doesn't 'float' heh heh heh.... so to speak with the seiners case.
