NFIOS part II

61.3 degrees and no love. Got one small sculpin and a 20" hali all inside the harbor drifting close to the rocks. Wanted to try the CBad canyon for sharks, but with cold water figured on hitting the warmer waters of the harbor. No skunk, but no fish for dinner.

Where do most folks make bait for trolling (mackerel)? What are the best techniques? Back east we used small feathers and small trolling spoons. What works best out here?

Thanks and have a happy 4th of July. America has earned it.

use a sabiki to make mackeral.I dont know OS but at dana the red bouy or barber poles are regular bait spots.just about any kelp line should be holding bait.lotta spanish mack around dana right now .makes for hardy trolling bait and not to big

WE MAKE BAIT RIGHT OFF THE OCEANSIDE PIER WITH SABIKI RIGS. ALWAYS PLENTY OF MACK THERE AT GREY LIGHT. ALSO TRY CHUMING CAT FOOD IN THE CAN.(THE WET STUFF).

The pipe just south of the pier is also good. Always check the buoy in front of the harbor and the artificial reefs. I slow troll squid tipped (those Humboldts are good for something) sabikis with a 3 to 4 oz torpedo. You can basically tell on the meter when you're going to get bit. Stop your troll on the bite and start your chum. Baitmaking, it's my favorite part of the fishing day

Mark,
Miguel was right, sardines not anchovies. Thanks everyone for all the help. Steve I had never trolled a sabiki rig before only trolled them--good gouge, will give that a shot. Hope everyone had a good weekend.
